A tender moment between Baby Frog and Baby Snake, who must say goodbye to their friendship because of fear and misunderstanding.

Why Frogs and Snakes Never Play Together is a touching African folktale about friendship, differences, and the influence of family beliefs.

In a quiet forest filled with sunlight and tall trees, two unlikely friends meet—Baby Frog and Baby Snake. Despite their differences, they quickly discover how much fun they can have together. But when they return home and share their new friendship, fear and old beliefs begin to interfere.

This gentle story reminds us how easily friendship can be broken when we judge others without truly knowing them.

SCENE I – IN THE WOODS

(Baby Frog hops happily around the trees. He notices Baby Snake resting in the sun.)

BABY FROG: Hello there! What are you doing?

BABY SNAKE: Hi! I’m just enjoying the warm sunshine. It feels so nice!

BABY FROG: What’s your name?

BABY SNAKE: I’m Baby Snake. What about you?

BABY FROG: I’m Baby Frog! Do you want to play with me?

BABY SNAKE: (excited) Yes! I’d love to! But… can you teach me how to hop?

BABY FROG: (proudly) Of course! Watch me carefully!

(Baby Frog hops high. Baby Snake wiggles and tries to imitate him.)

BABY SNAKE: This is fun! Look at me—I’m hopping!

BABY FROG: You’re doing great! Now, can you teach me how to slide on my belly?

BABY SNAKE: Sure! Just stretch out like this and glide along the ground!

(Baby Frog tries and slides awkwardly.)

BABY FROG: (giggling) Whoa! That feels funny—but I like it!

BABY SNAKE: You’re a fast learner! Want to try climbing a tree?

BABY FROG: (amazed) You can climb trees?!

BABY SNAKE:Follow me!

(They pretend to climb.)

BABY FROG: Wow! This is amazing! I’ve never done this before!

BABY SNAKE: I’m glad we met.

BABY FROG: Me too! You’re my best friend!

BABY SNAKE: You’re my best friend too!

(Pause. The light changes to evening.)

BABY SNAKE:Oh no, it’s getting late. I have to go home.

BABY FROG: Will you come back tomorrow?

BABY SNAKE: Of course! I can’t wait to play again!

BABY FROG: See you tomorrow!

(They wave goodbye and exit.)

SCENE II – AT THE FROG’S HOUSE

(Mother Frog waits outside. Baby Frog hops in happily.)

MOTHER FROG:Where have you been, Baby Frog?

BABY FROG: (excited) Oh, Mom! I had the best day ever! I made a new friend!

MOTHER FROG:A new friend? Who is it?

BABY FROG: His name is Baby Snake! He taught me how to slide and climb trees!

MOTHER FROG: (shocked) A snake?! No, no, no! That is not good!

BABY FROG: But Mom, he’s kind and fun!

MOTHER FROG: (firmly) You must not play with snakes! They are dangerous. They have poison in their teeth!

BABY FROG: But he didn’t hurt me…

MOTHER FROG: I said NO! Stay away from him! Do you understand?

BABY FROG: (sadly) …Yes, Mom.

MOTHER FROG: Now come inside. It’s time for bed.

(They go inside slowly.)

SCENE III – IN THE WOODS

(Baby Frog waits sadly. Baby Snake enters slowly.)

BABY SNAKE: Hi…

BABY FROG: Hi…

BABY SNAKE: You look sad.

BABY FROG: I am. My mom said I can’t play with you anymore.

BABY SNAKE: Mine said the same thing…

(Pause.)

BABY FROG: She told me frogs should catch snakes.

BABY SNAKE: My mom told me snakes should attack frogs.

(They look at each other, hurt.)

BABY FROG: But yesterday… we were just friends.

BABY SNAKE: We laughed and played all day.

BABY FROG: It was the best day.

BABY SNAKE: The best friendship day.

(They slowly sit apart from each other.)

BABY FROG AND BABY SNAKE: (together, softly) How sad… that we are not allowed to be friends.

(They stand, look at each other one last time, and slowly walk away in opposite directions.)

Conclusion: And so, Baby Frog and Baby Snake never played together again. Not because they wanted to stop being friends—but because fear and misunderstanding stood between them. The forest remained the same, but something precious had been lost: a friendship that could have grown, if only it had been given the chance.

Moral of the Story: Sometimes fear and prejudice can be stronger than friendship—but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Moral Values:

  • Acceptance of differences
  • Friendship beyond appearances
  • Questioning prejudice
  • Kindness and empathy
  • Courage to think for oneself
