SCRIPT:
(SETTING: Inside a cozy forest hut. Samuel is putting on his shoes while Manuel dramatically stretches as if preparing for a battle.)
SAMUEL: Father! Did you hear? A traveling carnival just arrived in town! They have fortune tellers!
MANUEL: (Strikes a superhero pose) And I heard they can read minds, predict the future, and tell you what you had for breakfast!
SAMUEL’S FATHER: (Shaking his head) Nonsense! And what did you eat for breakfast, Manuel?
MANUEL: Pancakes, sir!
SAMUEL’S FATHER: You have syrup on your shirt. You don’t need a fortune teller to figure that out.
SAMUEL: Come on, Father! Let us go see them! I want to know my future!
SAMUEL’S FATHER: Absolutely not. Look outside! It’s getting dark, and the forest gets wild at night.
MANUEL: (Pats his own chest proudly) Fear not, sir! I am as brave as a lion and strong as an ox! I will guard Samuel with my life! Nothing gets past Manuel!
SAMUEL’S FATHER: (Sighs) Very well. I trust you, Manuel. Go straight to town and come right back.
SAMUEL: Thank you, Father! You’re the best!
(Samuel and Manuel skip out of the hut and begin walking down a dark forest path.)
MANUEL: Do you really think they have magical powers, Samuel?
SAMUEL: Maybe! I’m going to ask if I’ll ever grow taller than you.
(A loud, booming bear roar echoes through the trees: ROAAAAR!)
MANUEL: (Jumps high into the air and grabs Samuel) WHAT WAS THAT?! A monster?! A giant toad?!
SAMUEL: Shhh! That was a bear! My father was right—we shouldn’t be out here!
MANUEL: (Whispering loudly) Don’t worry! If the bear comes, I’ll use my secret karate chop!
(The Bear stomps onto the path, blocking their way. It roars again.)
MANUEL: (Screaming in a high voice) FORGET THE KARATE CHOP! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
(They run around in circles screaming until they find a tall tree.)
MANUEL: Quick! Help me climb this tree!
SAMUEL: Okay, jump on my shoulders! Hurry!
(Manuel scrambled up Samuel’s back and pulls himself onto a branch.)
SAMUEL: (Reaching up) Great! Now give me your hand! Pull me up!
MANUEL: (Looking down, squeezing against the trunk) Uh… sorry, buddy! This branch only has room for one person… and half of my elbow! Find your own tree!
SAMUEL: What?! Manuel, wait!
(The Bear stomps closer, growling. Samuel freezes.)
SAMUEL: (Panicking) Oh no, oh no! I read in a book that bears don’t like dead stuff!
(Samuel flops face-down onto the ground like a wooden plank, holding his breath and pretending to be dead.)
(The Bear walks over to Samuel. It sniffs his shoes, sniffs his hands, and then leans down right next to Samuel’s ear, making loud, funny sniffing noises. After a moment, the Bear shakes its head in disappointment and slowly walks away into the bushes.)
(Manuel slowly climbs down from the tree and creeps over to Samuel.)
MANUEL: Samuel? Are you alive?
SAMUEL: (Gets up and brushes the dirt off his clothes) No thanks to you!
MANUEL: (Eyes wide) That was amazing! I thought he was going to turn you into dinner! But… I saw him put his mouth right next to your ear. Was he whispering to you?
SAMUEL: As a matter of fact, yes! He was a fortune-teller bear!
MANUEL: (Staring in disbelief) A fortune-teller bear?! In these woods?!
SAMUEL: Yes! First, he sniffed my hands to read my palms. Then, he whispered a very special prediction right into my ear!
MANUEL: Wow! What did he tell you?!
SAMUEL: (Looking straight at Manuel) He gave me a piece of advice for the future: “Never travel with a friend who disappears into a tree at the first sign of trouble.”
MANUEL: (Gulping, looking down at his shoes) Oh… oops.
SAMUEL: Exactly. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going home to my father. Alone. Good-bye, “brave lion”!
(Samuel walks off confidently. Manuel stands alone on the dark path, looking embarrassed, then runs after him in a panic.)
MANUEL: Wait for me! What if the bear comes back?! Samuel!
