ACT 1 – IN THE HOSPITAL
—Lights On—
(Mr. Rogers, Man 1 [God], Man 2 [Devil], and the Woman [Death] are sitting in the hospital reception area. The Nurse enters the stage and approaches Mr. Rogers.)
NURSE: Congratulations, Mr. Rogers! Your son has been born.
MR. ROGERS: (Stands) How are my wife and the baby?
NURSE: They are both fine. I’ll let you know when you can see them.
MR. ROGERS: Thank you very much!
(The Nurse leaves the stage. Mr. Rogers starts walking nervously back and forth.)
WOMAN (DEATH): What is bothering you?
MR. ROGERS: I have a lot on my mind.
MAN 1 (GOD): The nurse said everything was alright.
MR. ROGERS: You don’t know the problems I’m facing. How am I going to pay this hospital bill? I work day and night, and it’s still not enough.
WOMAN (DEATH): How many kids do you have?
MR. ROGERS: This is my fifth. I love them with all my heart, and I don’t want them to suffer, but everything is so expensive nowadays.
MAN 1 (GOD): God will help you. You must have faith and leave everything in His hands. He always answers our prayers!
MR. ROGERS: No, He doesn’t. It feels like God ignores me when I pray because we just keep getting poorer. I need to find someone very rich to be my son’s godfather.
(Man 1 [God] stands and approaches Mr. Rogers.)
MAN 1 (GOD): I’ll be your son’s godfather. I’ll give him all my love and make him happy.
MR. ROGERS: How can you be my son’s godfather if I don’t even know you?
MAN 1 (GOD): Yes, you do. I’ve been by your side since the day you were born.
MR. ROGERS: That’s not possible, because I don’t remember you. Who are you?
MAN 1 (GOD): I am God.
MR. ROGERS: Well, I don’t want you as my child’s godfather! You make the rich richer and the poor poorer.
MAN 1 (GOD): You don’t know what you’re talking about! I distribute wealth and poverty alike.
MR. ROGERS: I don’t trust you, and I don’t want you.
(Man 1 [God] sits down, defeated. Man 2 [Devil] stands and approaches Mr. Rogers.)
MAN 2 (DEVIL): If you choose me as your son’s godfather, I will give him an abundance of money and all the pleasures of the world.
MR. ROGERS: Now that’s what I’m looking for.
MAN 2 (DEVIL): Let’s make a deal, then.
MR. ROGERS: First, I need to know who you are if I’m going to trust you with my son’s life.
MAN 2 (DEVIL): I am the Devil.
MR. ROGERS: Even if you are the Devil, I’m not afraid of you because my life already feels like hell. But I still don’t want you as my son’s godfather.
MAN 2 (DEVIL): Why not?
MR. ROGERS: Because you cheat and lie, corrupt mankind, sow discord, tempt us to sin, and stir up war every single day.
MAN 2 (DEVIL): You misunderstand me. I am merely like a chained dog that only bites when someone gets too close.
MR. ROGERS: Exactly why I prefer to keep you far away from my family. You’re wicked.
(Man 2 [Devil] sits down. The Woman [Death] stands and approaches Mr. Rogers.)
WOMAN (DEATH): Would you like me to be your son’s godmother?
MR. ROGERS: I never thought about getting a godmother for my son, but it’s not a bad idea. Who are you?
WOMAN (DEATH): I am Death. I am powerful, and I treat everyone equally.
MR. ROGERS: Stay away from me—you’re evil!
WOMAN (DEATH): Why do you say that? I bring an end to pain and suffering.
MR. ROGERS: That’s true… and you take the rich and the poor alike, without distinction. You will be my child’s godmother!
WOMAN (DEATH): Deal! I’ll take care of your son, make him rich, and ensure you never lack anything because you’re my new friend. See you later, buddy!
(The Woman [Death] leaves the stage. Man 1 [God] and Man 2 [Devil] stand up and approach Mr. Rogers together.)
MAN 1 (GOD): Look for me when you need me. I’ll give you hope, strength, and comfort.
MAN 2 (DEVIL): And I will make you the world’s most powerful man.
(Man 1 and Man 2 leave the stage. The Doctor and the Nurse enter and approach Mr. Rogers.)
DOCTOR: Mr. Rogers, I have some bad news.
MR. ROGERS: What’s wrong, Doctor?
DOCTOR: Something unexpected happened. Your wife passed away a few minutes ago. We did everything we could to save her. I am so sorry.
NURSE: But your child is doing very well.
(Mr. Rogers sits down, covers his face with his hands, and begins to cry.)
MR. ROGERS: No… my dear wife. What are we going to do without you?
—Lights Off—
ACT 2 – AT THE CEMETERY
—Lights On—
(Mr. Rogers is walking away from the cemetery. A crowd passes by his side. The Woman [Death] enters and approaches him.)
WOMAN (DEATH): How are you holding up?
MR. ROGERS: Oh, take a guess!
WOMAN (DEATH): You’re not in a good mood today.
MR. ROGERS: (Angry) How do you expect me to be? You took my wife, and that wasn’t the deal!
WOMAN (DEATH): Why do you think I was at the hospital in the first place? I went for her. But when I heard you looking for a godfather, I offered to be the godmother. That was the least I could do for you!
MR. ROGERS: Well, you left my children without a mother. I’ve always been poor, but I had my wife’s love and support. Now I am poorer and lonelier than ever.
WOMAN (DEATH): That’s why I’m here. I came to ease your suffering.
MR. ROGERS: Are you going to take me with you?
WOMAN (DEATH): Not yet.
(People from the crowd walk past Mr. Rogers, glance at him, and start whispering and laughing.)
MR. ROGERS: Why are they laughing?
WOMAN (DEATH): They think you’ve lost your mind because you’re talking to thin air.
MR. ROGERS: I’m not talking to thin air, I’m talking to you.
WOMAN (DEATH): You are, but they can’t see me. Listen—I have a gift for you to make up for the pain I’ve caused your family. But first, you must know that I will always protect my godson, and I will only take him when his time has truly come. Now, pay close attention: Whenever you are called to see a sick person, I will appear. If I stand at the head of the bed, you may confidently declare that you can heal them. But if I stand at their feet, they belong to me, and you must tell them there is nothing left to do.
MR. ROGERS: What’s in it for me?
WOMAN (DEATH): People will think you’re a miraculous healer and pay you a fortune. You can give them simple herbs or water, and they will recover.
MR. ROGERS: Well… I suppose that’s fair, given what you took from me.
WOMAN (DEATH): Just remember the rule: if I stand at the feet, nothing you do will save them. See you later, buddy!
(The Woman [Death] leaves the stage.)
—Lights Off—
ACT 3 – IN THE HOSPITAL
—Lights On—
(Thirty years have passed. Mr. Rogers is now a wealthy man due to his miraculous healings. His granddaughter lies gravely ill in a hospital bed. Mr. Rogers stands by her side, while his youngest son [Death’s Godson] watches anxiously. The Woman [Death] enters and stands silently at the foot of the bed.)
DEATH’S GODSON: Godmother, did you come to comfort us? Are you going to save my little daughter?
WOMAN (DEATH): No, my dear godson. With a heavy heart, I am here to do my job.
DEATH’S GODSON: But my father can heal her! I’ve seen him do it a hundred times.
GRANDDAUGHTER: (Waking up) Grandpa?
MR. ROGERS: I’m right here, my sweet princess.
GRANDDAUGHTER: Soon… I will be with Grandma. (Looking at her father) Dad, don’t be sad.
DEATH’S GODSON: (Crying) My baby, I love you so much!
(The Granddaughter closes her eyes.)
MR. ROGERS: (To his son) Son, please… I need to be alone with my granddaughter for a moment.
DEATH_S_GODSON: I understand, Dad. I’ll step out. (He leaves the stage.)
MR. ROGERS: What are you doing here? You aren’t welcome.
WOMAN (DEATH): I came for her.
MR. ROGERS: I won’t let you. Go away!
WOMAN (DEATH): I am sorry. There is nothing you can do, and you know it. No remedy will help her now. I decide when someone stays or goes.
MR. ROGERS: Your own godson will be devastated! Please, just move to her head!
WOMAN (DEATH): I cannot do that.
MR. ROGERS: I’m begging you! You took my wife, and so many others. Give her another chance!
WOMAN (DEATH): You know that everyone is born to die.
MR. ROGERS: I know, but not her. Not yet!
(Mr. Rogers frantically rushes over and turns the hospital bed around so that The Woman [Death] is now standing at the little girl’s head.)
WOMAN (DEATH): (Quietly stepping to the foot of the bed again) You can’t cheat destiny.
MR. ROGERS: (Panicking, turns the bed around again so Death is back at the head) Then take me instead!
WOMAN (DEATH): (Stepping back to the foot of the bed) You’re a foolish man. It is not your time. She belongs to me now; she has slipped into an eternal sleep.
MR. ROGERS: (Throws himself over the bed) No! My dear, wake up, please wake up… (Burries his face in the blankets and weeps)
(The Woman [Death] takes the little girl’s hand, and they exit together. Lights out—brief pause—Lights on. Mr. Rogers is back in the hospital reception area from Act 1, sitting with his eyes closed and crying. Man 1, Man 2, and Death stand nearby. The Nurse enters.)
MR. ROGERS: (Yelling out in his sleep) No! Don’t take her away from me!
NURSE: Mr. Rogers! Mr. Rogers, wake up!
MR. ROGERS: (Opens his eyes, disoriented) What’s wrong? Where am I?
NURSE: You just fell asleep. You can come in and see your wife and newborn son now.
MR. ROGERS: What are you talking about? My wife and son? Where am I?!
NURSE: In the hospital, of course. Your son has just been born!
MAN 1 (GOD): (Smiling gently) You should thank God that your wife and child are fine, healthy… and alive.
NURSE: (Offering a hand) Come with me, please.
(Mr. Rogers and the Nurse leave the stage together, leaving a sense of relief in the air.)
