Detective Dog Niki: The Case of the Stolen Things is not an ordinary family pet—he has a nose for trouble and a talent for solving mysteries! When Amanda, Monica, and their mother return home to discover that their house has been robbed, they are shocked to find that several belongings are missing, including Monica’s favorite watch, the kitchen appliances, and even their beloved dog, Niki. Fortunately, Niki soon returns with an important clue. Can this clever dog lead the family and the police to the thieves and help solve the mystery?

SCRIPT:
ACT 1 – IN THE LIVING ROOM
(SETTING: A cozy living room. Sofa cushions are strewn across the floor, loose papers are scattered, and a lamp lies on its side. MRS. TAYLOR, AMANDA, and MONICA enter from Stage Left, talking casually.)
AMANDA: That movie was great!
MRS. TAYLOR: (shaking her head) I didn’t really like it.
MONICA: (rolling her eyes playfully) You don’t like anything, Mom!
MRS. TAYLOR: (gasps, looking around the room, hands on her cheeks) Oh my goodness! What happened here?
AMANDA: (pointing in shock) Oh no! Someone broke into our house!
MONICA: (clasping her hands over her mouth) It can’t be! Look at this big mess!
(MRS. TAYLOR rushes over and reaches down to pick up the fallen lamp.)
AMANDA: (reaching out her hand) Don’t touch anything, Mom! Leave it as it is. I’ll call the police. (She pulls out her cell phone, taps the screen, puts it to her ear, and steps toward Stage Right, speaking in a low whisper.)
MONICA: (panicking) I’ll check my bedroom. I hope they didn’t take anything! (She rushes off Stage Right.)
AMANDA: (lowers her phone, hanging up) The police are on their way.
MONICA: (runs back on Stage Right, waving her bare wrist in the air) They took my favorite watch!
AMANDA: Oh no, sister! That watch was expensive! I told you not to spend all your money on it.
MONICA: (pouting) I know! Next time I’ll just buy a cheap fake one.
MRS. TAYLOR: Amanda, go check your room and mine to see if anything else is missing. I’ll go look in the kitchen.
AMANDA: Okay, Mom.
(MRS. TAYLOR exits Stage Left while AMANDA exits Stage Right. A brief pause. Both quickly run back on stage.)
AMANDA: Nothing is missing from our bedrooms!
MRS. TAYLOR: Thank goodness! But the kitchen is a different story. They took the blender, the toaster, and the coffee maker!
AMANDA: (looking around, puzzled) Wait… where’s Niki? I haven’t heard him bark at all.
MONICA: That’s strange. He usually runs to the door to greet us.
MRS. TAYLOR: (cupping her hands around her mouth, shouting toward the back) Niki! Niki!
AMANDA: I’ll search for him! (Exits Stage Right.)
(AMANDA returns quickly, looking worried and clutching her hands together.)
AMANDA: Niki isn’t here anywhere!
ALL THREE: (in unison, gasping loudly) They took Niki!
AMANDA: They stole our sweet dog!
MONICA: (stamping her feet dramatically) What are we going to do without him?
MRS. TAYLOR: (placing her hands on their shoulders) Stay calm, girls.
(SOUND EFFECT: LOUD KNOCKING – [KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK] at the front door.)
AMANDA: That must be the police. (She hurries to Stage Left and opens the imaginary front door.)
POLICE 1: Good afternoon. We received a call about a break-in.
MRS. TAYLOR: Yes, Officers, please come in!
(POLICE 1 and POLICE 2 step onto the stage, looking around authoritatively.)
POLICE 2: (pulling out a notepad and pen, writing) Good afternoon, ma’am. What time did you get home, and what is missing?
MRS. TAYLOR: We got back from the movies about twenty minutes ago. When we walked in, the living room was a complete mess. They took my daughter’s watch, plus our blender, toaster, and coffee maker.
POLICE 1: Is that everything?
AMANDA & MONICA: (shouting together) No! They took our dog, too!
POLICE 2: (stopping his pen, looking up) Well, that’s unusual for a robbery.
POLICE 1: What breed is your dog?
AMANDA: (crossing her arms) We don’t care about breeds! We love all dogs the same!
POLICE 1: (raising his hands in defense) I understand, but we need a description so we can spot him. What did he look like?
AMANDA: What do you mean looked like? He’s not gone forever! He’s safe… somewhere out there!
MRS. TAYLOR: I certainly hope so!
POLICE 2: Please forgive my partner. Can you just describe his appearance?
MONICA: He’s beautiful! He loves to play, he naps all afternoon, and he wags his tail when we come home…
POLICE 2: (smiling gently) I mean, what does he look like physically?
AMANDA: He’s white with black spots and very fluffy! He’s wearing a blue collar with his name tag, “Niki.”
POLICE 1: Got it. We’ll do our best to find him and your stolen items.
(SOUND EFFECT: DOOR SCRATCHING – [SCRATCH, SCRATCH, SCRATCH] coming from Stage Left.)
MRS. TAYLOR: Did you hear that? It sounds like something is scratching at the door. (She walks over and opens the door.) It’s Niki!
(NIKI the dog bounds onto the stage, tail wagging excitedly.)
AMANDA & MONICA: (kneeling down, hugging NIKI tightly) Niki! Where were you? We missed you so much!
(NIKI runs over to POLICE 1 and gently tugs on his pant leg, nudging him toward the exit.)
AMANDA: Look! Niki wants us to follow him!
POLICE 2: Let’s see where he leads us!
(NIKI trots off Stage Left. POLICE 1, POLICE 2, MRS. TAYLOR, AMANDA, and MONICA follow in a single-file line.)
ACT 2 – IN THE STREET
(SETTING: Outside on the neighborhood street. Stage Right represents the neighbor’s front door.)
(NIKI leads the group onto the stage from Stage Left across to Stage Right.)
MRS. TAYLOR: Hey, he’s heading straight for our neighbor’s house!
(NIKI stops right outside the front door at Stage Right, pointing his nose at the door.)
POLICE 1: (putting his hand up to stop the group) Everyone stand back just in case! It could be dangerous.
MRS. TAYLOR: But I know my neighbors well. They’ve always been so friendly!
AMANDA: Mom, you know what they say: “You can see a person’s face, but you can’t read their heart.” They never even say hello to me!
MONICA: Me neither!
(POLICE 1 knocks loudly on the door frame. THIEF 1 opens the door. Immediately, NIKI steps forward.)
(SOUND EFFECT: DOG BARKING AND GROWLING – [LOUD BARK! GROWL!])
THIEF 1: (jumping back in fear, shaking his bandaged hand) Get that dog away from me! He already bit my hand earlier!
POLICE 2: (stepping forward, pointing) Aha! So you had this dog in your house?
THIEF 1: (clapping his hands over his mouth) Oh! Uh… no! That’s not what I meant! I made a mistake!
(THIEF 2 walks out through the door, holding a toaster in his hands.)
THIEF 2: Hey, stop chatting with the neighbors! We’ve got a lot of work to— (stops dead in his tracks and freezes)
THIEF 1: It’s the police!
THIEF 2: (squeaking) Uh oh…
MRS. TAYLOR: (pointing at the toaster) Hey! That’s my toaster!
THIEF 1 & 2: (looking at each other) We’re busted!
MRS. TAYLOR: I can’t believe it! You were the ones stealing from us!
POLICE 1: You two are under arrest!
THIEF 2: (shrugging, thrusting the toaster out) Here, take your toaster back, ma’am. I prefer a different brand anyway. (Hands the toaster to MRS. TAYLOR.)
(POLICE 2 steps up and places toy handcuffs on THIEF 1 and THIEF 2. POLICE 1 quickly steps inside the door frame at Stage Right and reappears carrying the blender and coffee maker.)
POLICE 1: Are these yours as well?
MRS. TAYLOR: Yes! My blender and my coffee maker!
POLICE 1: (handing the appliances to MRS. TAYLOR and AMANDA) Here you go. Just make sure to come to the station tomorrow morning to fill out a report.
MRS. TAYLOR: We definitely will, Officer!
MONICA: Wait, what about my watch?
POLICE 1: (glaring at THIEF 2) Where is her watch?
THIEF 2: You mean the shiny wrist watch?
MONICA: Yes!
THIEF 2: (holding up his arm) I’m wearing it.
(POLICE 1 gently unclasps the watch from THIEF 2’s wrist and hands it to MONICA.)
POLICE 1: Here is your watch, safe and sound.
MONICA: (clasping it to her chest) Thank you so much!
THIEF 2: (leaning forward toward MONICA) You know, that watch wasn’t working, so I had to put a new battery in it. You owe me five dollars!
MONICA: (gasping) You should be ashamed of yourself!
MRS. TAYLOR: Thank you both so much for your help, Officers.
POLICE 2: Don’t thank us—thank your dog! He’s the real detective here.
POLICE 1: Have a great day, everyone.
(POLICE 1 and POLICE 2 march THIEF 1 and THIEF 2 off Stage Left.)
MRS. TAYLOR: What an exhausting day! Let’s go home and get some rest.
AMANDA & MONICA: (cheering) Come on, Detective Niki, let’s go home!
(They all turn and happily march off Stage Left following NIKI.)
