JERRY: Miss Sue, where’s Rex?
MISS SUE: He’s at the Principal’s office. Don’t forget to take him home when you leave.
JERRY: I won’t! I’m so excited to have him stay with me for the weekend.
EDDY: You mean stay with us.
MISS SUE: No, Eddy. This time Rex will be Jerry’s responsibility.
JERRY: Did you hear that, Eddy? Only my responsibility!
(The school bell rings.)
MISS SUE: Well, Jerry, take good care of Rex, and I’ll see you both on Monday.
JERRY AND EDDY: Bye, Miss Sue!
(Jerry and Eddy leave with the cage.)
SCENE II – AT JERRY AND EDDY’S HOME
(Jerry and Eddy are in their bedroom.)
JERRY: Listen, Eddy, stay away from the cage. Rex is my responsibility, and I don’t want to get in trouble because of you.
REX: I’m Rex! I’m Rex!
(Grandmother enters the room.)
GRANDMOTHER: Oh, what a beautiful bird!
REX: Oh, what a beautiful bird!
EDDY: Hi, Grandma! Rex is our class pet.
GRANDMOTHER: What is he doing here?
EDDY: It’s Jerry’s turn to take care of him for the weekend.
GRANDMOTHER: You have to be very careful with him. Keep your bedroom door closed.
JERRY: Don’t worry, Grandma, he will stay safe in his cage.
(Grandmother leaves. Jerry’s Mother enters.)
MOTHER: Jerry, Luis is on the phone for you.
JERRY: Thanks, Mom!
(Mother and Jerry exit. Eddy stays in the room with Rex.)
REX: I’m Rex! I’m Rex!
EDDY: Wow, it’s so hot in here!
(Eddy tries to turn on the air conditioner.)
EDDY: The air conditioner isn’t working… I have to tell Mom. I’ll open the window for now.
(Eddy opens the window.)
REX: I’m hungry! I’m hungry!
EDDY: Mmm… Jerry told me to stay away from you, Rex.
REX: I’m hungry! I’m hungry!
EDDY: Fine. Where did Jerry put your food?
(Eddy looks around and finds the birdseed in Jerry’s backpack.)
EDDY: Here it is! I’ll give you some seeds.
(Eddy opens the cage door. Rex flies right past him and out the open window.)
REX: I’m going home! I’m going home!
EDDY: No! Come back, come back! Oh no, I’m in big trouble!
(Jerry, Grandmother, and Mother rush into the room.)
MOTHER: What’s wrong?
GRANDMOTHER: Why are you yelling?
(Jerry notices the empty birdcage.)
JERRY: Where’s Rex?!
(Eddy starts to cry.)
EDDY: Oh, I’m so sorry, Jerry! I tried to feed him, and he escaped!
JERRY: What?!
MOTHER: Eddy, why did you open the window?
EDDY: It was so hot in here! I tried to turn on the air conditioner, but it didn’t work, so I opened the window.
MOTHER: And when you opened the cage door to give him food, he flew out?
EDDY: Yes, Mom… I’m really sorry!
JERRY: I told you to stay away from the cage! Oh no, what am I going to do now?
GRANDMOTHER: Just tell your teacher the truth, Jerry. She will understand.
JERRY: But Rex is lost! Miss Sue will never trust me again.
MOTHER: Let’s go to her house right now and tell her what happened.
JERRY: I’m so embarrassed…
(Mother gives Jerry a reassuring hug.)
MOTHER: Come on, sweetie. Let’s go.
(They all leave.)
SCENE III – AT MISS SUE’S HOME
(They knock at the door. Miss Sue opens it.)
MISS SUE: Oh, what a nice surprise! I didn’t expect to see you so soon, Jerry.
JERRY: Miss Sue… I came to tell you how sorry I am. I lost Rex.
(Suddenly, they hear a familiar voice from inside the house.)
REX: I’m Rex! I’m Rex!
JERRY: What was that?
MISS SUE: (Laughs) It’s Rex! He flew right back home!
EDDY: Miss Sue, please don’t blame Jerry—it was all my fault. But hey, now that I think about it, when Rex flew out the window, he said, “I’m going home!”
REX: I’m hungry! I’m hungry!
EDDY: Oh no! Not again!
(Everyone laughs.)
