SCRIPT:

NARRATOR: On a sunny farm, Mother Duck sat on her nest, waiting patiently for her eggs to hatch. Around her lived horses, pigs, cows, goats, hens, cats, and dogs. Everyone was excited to meet the new ducklings.

(Cracking sounds.)

DUCK 1–4: Peep! Peep!

MOTHER DUCK: Oh, my sweet babies! Let me count… one, two, three, four… Hmm? One egg is still left. And it’s the biggest one!

NARRATOR: Suddenly, the last egg cracked open. Out came a large gray duckling with a long neck and big feet.

UGLY DUCKLING: Peep… hello, Mommy!

MOTHER DUCK: Oh dear… you look so… different.

DUCKS 1–4: Ha, ha, ha! You’re not like us!

DUCK 1: Stay away!

DUCK 2: We won’t play with you!

DUCK 3: You don’t belong here!

DUCK 4: You’re so strange!

UGLY DUCKLING: Please… stop teasing me.

NARRATOR: The other animals joined in.

HORSE: What an odd duck!

PIG: You look like a scarecrow!

COW: You can’t come to my party!

GOAT: You’re too clumsy!

CAT: How embarrassing!

DOG: I don’t like the look of you!

HEN: You’ll never fit in!

UGLY DUCKLING: Why doesn’t anyone like me?

MOTHER DUCK: Maybe… you should go for a walk and find your place.

UGLY DUCKLING: I’ll leave. Maybe somewhere I belong.

NARRATOR: The little duckling walked and walked until he reached a lake.

UGLY DUCKLING: Do you know any ducks like me?

BIRDS: No… we’ve never seen anyone like you.

GEESE: This is dangerous here. Hunters are nearby. You should go.

NARRATOR: Tired and lonely, he lay down near the water and fell asleep.

SWAN 1: Hello there! Swim with us.

UGLY DUCKLING: With me? But… I’m ugly.

SWAN 2: We don’t see anything wrong.

SWAN 3: Look at your reflection.

NARRATOR: The duckling looked into the water and gasped.

UGLY DUCKLING: That… that’s me? I’m… beautiful!

SWANS: You’re a swan, just like us!

CHILDREN: Look! A new swan! He’s graceful! He’s beautiful!

UGLY DUCKLING (now SWAN): I thought I was ugly… but I just hadn’t grown into who I truly am.

NARRATOR: And from that day on, the little duckling lived happily as a graceful swan, proud of who he was.
