CHARLES: Hi, Mom!
(Mother stands up and hugs him.)
MOTHER: How was school?
CHARLES: It was fine… but I still miss Tim.
MOTHER: Charles, let’s not talk about that anymore.
CHARLES: Do you think he’s okay… wherever he is now?
(Mother remains silent. Suddenly, the phone rings. She answers nervously.)
MOTHER: Hello? Oh… hi, Susan. (pauses) What?! That can’t be possible! Are you sure? (silence) No, don’t tell Charles. But do they know who… or where…? (long pause) Alright, call me back.
(She hangs up the phone. Charles looks worried.)
CHARLES: What happened, Mom?
MOTHER: Nothing you need to worry about.
CHARLES: Can I go to the park? Scott and Jason are waiting to practice for Saturday’s game.
MOTHER: Fine. But don’t come home too late.
CHARLES: Thanks, Mom! Bye!
(Charles runs out.)
Scene II
(Charles, Scott, and Jason are practicing baseball in the park. Suddenly, a boy walks toward them.)
SCOTT: Hey, look… someone’s coming.
JASON: Wait… it looks like—
CHARLES: Tim?!
SCOTT and JASON: (together) Tim!
TIM: Hi, guys!
(The three friends step back in shock.)
SCOTT: This isn’t real. Run!
(They start running, but Tim calls after them.)
TIM: Stop! Why are you leaving? It’s me! I just came to play.
CHARLES: (trembling) Tim… you’re dead!
JASON: We even went to your funeral!
TIM: Dead? Me? Do I look dead to you?
SCOTT: Yes! Pale and cold! We saw you in your coffin, Tim. We were there when they buried you.
(Tim scratches his head, confused.)
TIM: I can’t remember much. Only darkness… and people crying. That’s it.
SCOTT: (panicking) This can’t be happening!
TIM: Look—hold my hand!
(Jason touches Tim’s hand and shudders.)
JASON: You’re cold!
CHARLES: Tim, you can’t be here. You don’t belong here anymore.
TIM: But I want to play!
CHARLES: You’re too weak.
TIM: (quietly) Maybe you’re right… I can’t feel my legs. I’ll go now… but I’ll see you tomorrow.
SCOTT: No! You can’t come to school!
TIM: Then I’ll wait for you here. Don’t forget… we still have a game to finish.
(Tim slowly walks away. The others huddle together, terrified.)
SCOTT, CHARLES, JASON: (together) Let’s go home!
Scene III
(Charles rushes home. His mother is waiting in the living room.)
CHARLES: Mom! Something happened!
MOTHER: Charles… sit down. I need to tell you something important.
CHARLES: What is it?
MOTHER: Remember Susan’s call earlier? She said… Tim’s grave was found open. His body… is missing.
CHARLES: (pale) Mom… I saw him.
MOTHER: Who?
CHARLES: Tim. He came to the park. He wanted to play.
MOTHER: (shaken) That’s impossible… unless…
CHARLES: Jason touched him—he was cold. Mom, what if… what if he never finds peace?
MOTHER: Charles, it’s late. Go to your room. We’ll talk more tomorrow.
CHARLES: Good night, Mom.
(Charles kisses her and goes upstairs. He lies down, closing his eyes. Suddenly, he hears a knock on the window. He opens his eyes in fear.)
TIM: (whispering outside) Charles… It’s me. I’m cold. Please… let me in.
(Blackout.)
