WIFE:  Don’t come too late for dinner.

WOODCUTTER:  I’ll be back as soon as I finish cutting the wood.

WIFE:  Treat well our donkey, and don’t overload it with wood.

WOODCUTTER:  Don’t worry, I won’t.

WIFE:  I hope so.  Because if you do…I’ll know.

WOODCUTTER:  How will you know?.  There’s no one in the forest, but me.

WIFE:  That I can not tell you.  I know many things that happen in the forest while you are cutting wood.

WOODCUTTER:  That’s nonsense.  Ha, ha, ha, ha, oh, wait…a bird tells you everything…right?.

WIFE:  Well, not exactly.

WOODCUTTER:  I have to go.   I’ll see you tonight.

(The woodcutter kisses his wife and leaves with the donkey and the dog)

SCENE 2 – IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FOREST

(The woodcutter is overloading the donkey with wood.  The dog is lying on the ground)

WOODCUTTER:  (to the Donkey)  I think you can carry some more. (He puts more wood over the donkey)  Now , let’s go home.  (The donkey doesn’t move.) COME ON YOU OLD DONKEY!.  DON’T BE LAZY AND START WALKING!.  (The donkey doesn’t move.  The woodcutter bends over, takes  a piece of wood and starts hitting the donkey.  The dog stands and starts barking walking around the donkey.  The woodcutter hears a voice)

VOICE:  Don’t hit that poor animal.

WOODCUTTER: (surprised looks around) Who said that?.

VOICE:  One of these days he’ll teach you a lesson.

WOODCUTTER:  (hitting the donkey) I’ll teach YOU a lesson!.

DONKEY:  (in a soft voice) Master, please, don’t hit me.

WOODCUTTER:  Oh, my God.  I’ve never heard a talking donkey.

DOG:  Me neither!.

WOODCUTTER:  I’m getting crazy!.  A talking DONKEY and a talking DOG…I’m going home!.

(The woodcutter leaves)

SCENE 3 – IN THE HUT

(The woodcutter’s wife is sitting on a sofa.  The woodcutter enters running and yelling.  )

WOODCUTTER:  I’m sick!.  I must have a fever!.

(His wife stands and approaches the woodcutter)

WIFE:  Sit down!.  (The woodcutter sits and his wife touches his forehead)  You don’t have a fever.

WOODCUTTER:  Then I have a headache.

WIFE:  Make up your mind.   What is wrong with you?.

WOODCUTTER:  I have to tell you the truth.  I overloaded the donkey with wood, then he couldn’t move or walk, so I got angry and hit him with a piece of wood.

WIFE:  WHAT!.  You hit that poor animal?.

WOODCUTTER:  Yes!.  Yes, I did…repeatedly!.  And I am so sorry!.

WIFE:  I told you to treat him well.

WOODCUTTER:  But wait, there’s more.

WIFE:  Tell me!.

WOODCUTTER:  The donkey talked to me!.  Can you believe it?.  He REALLY talked to me!.  That’s when I felt I was getting nuts!.

WIFE:  So… he talked to you too.

WOODCUTTER:   (surprised) What do you mean he talked to you too?.  Oh, I get it!.  That’s how you know everything!.

WIFE:  Yes!.  And I know that this is not the first time you hurt him.  We have to take care of the animals, and feed them so they can be strong and healthy.

WOODCUTTER:   I will never beat him and torture him again!.

WIFE:  I’m glad you learned a lesson!.
