Safeguard Your Child’s Lungs By Asthma-Proofing Their Bedroom
Asthma is the most common chronic disease in American children, with six million children battling the lung condition, according to the AAFA. Children with asthma typically experience coughing, wheezing, and chest pains due to air not moving around the lungs as it should. It’s also common for children to have difficulties sleeping as a result of their symptoms flaring up. Your child’s bedroom, therefore, plays a vital role in dealing with your child’s condition. So, taking steps to eliminate asthma triggers to ensure that your child is refreshed and ready to enjoy a day of fun and learning at school is a must.
Regularly wash stuffed toys
Every child has a stuffed toy or two which they adore and take everywhere with them. However, these toys harbor dust mites which are a common cause of asthma in children. Where possible, it’s best to keep these toys out of your child’s bedroom. Encourage your child to make a game out of putting his or her favorite stuffed toy in a makeshift bed in the sitting room every night, to persuade your child to sleep without it. In addition, you’ll need to wash stuffed toys weekly in water which is at least 130 degrees F. Whereas, non-washable toys can be placed in a bag and popped in the freezer for 24 hours to kill dust mites.
Tackle mold spores
Children are more likely to develop asthma when there are a high number of mold spores in the home. Meanwhile, children with asthma have worse symptoms when there are spores present in their living environment. Mold grows in any area of the home where there is moisture. So, avoid leaving damp towels in your child’s room and wipe the windows clean of condensation every day. It’s also wise to regularly check behind large pieces of bulky furniture to ensure there’s no mold growing in secret.
Minimize soft furnishings
Dust mites hide out in carpet, so it’s best to strip the carpet from your child’s bedroom and opt for a stylish wooden floor instead. Upholstered headboards should be removed and replaced with wood too, to prevent dust from being inhaled. You should also invest in some dust-proof bedding and pillow covers to protect your child’s bedding and to encourage a good night’s sleep.
A child’s lungs are severely impacted following the onset of asthma. So, you need to take steps to asthma-proof their bedroom. Thankfully, by regularly washing stuffed toys, keeping an eye out for mold, and cutting back on soft furnishings, you’ll benefit your child’s overall lung health.
