THE BARBER SHOP

CHARACTERS:

BARBER

MAN

MAN WITH LONG DIRTY HAIR AND AN UNTRIMMED BEARD

SCRIPT:

(A man enters the barbershop.  He sits.  He picks up a magazine from a table and starts reading it.  The barber says good-bye to a customer. The customer leaves)

BARBER: Good morning, sir.   Please, come and sit down.

(The man stands up and sits in the barber chair)

BARBER: So, what can I do for you today?.

MAN: I need a good hair cut.

BARBER: You came to the right place!.

MAN: My brother gave me good references about you.

BARBER: You will not be disappointed.  Please, just relax and let me do my work.

(The barber wets the man’s hair and starts cutting it)

BARBER: It’s a nice day today.  Don’t you think so?.

MAN: Yes it is.  In fact, I’m going on a trip today, and the weather is perfect!.

BARBER: Oh, and where are you going?.

MAN: I’m going on vacations to Europe.

BARBER: That sounds interesting!.  And what cities are you visiting?.

MAN: I’m going to Paris, Spain, Rome, and London.

BARBER: What places are you planning to visit?.

MAN: Well, Rome has been a sacred place since ancient times.   I suppose we will visit the Roman Colosseum, which is considered sacred because of its legendary association with early Christian martyrs.

BARBER: Hmmm, is that all?.

MAN: I will also visit the St. Peter’s Basilica, which centers around the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle and is one of the largest churches in the world.

BARBER: But, what are you going to do for fun!.

MAN: What do you mean?.

BARBER: You’re not going to Rome to pray, right?.

MAN: Oh, surely not. God is everywhere!.

BARBER: God is not everywhere because He doesn’t exist.

MAN: You don’t believe in God?.

BARBER: No, I don’t.

MAN: Why?.

BARBER: Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn’t exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people?. Would there be abandoned children?. If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can’t imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things.

MAN: Mmmm, I really don’t want to argue with you.  I don’t want to have a misunderstanding.

BARBER: You’re right.   Tell me, what do you think about your new haircut?

(The Man looks in the mirror)

MAN: Very nice.  You did a good job!.

BARBER: I’m glad you like it!.

(The Man stands up and pays the Barber)

BARBER: Thank you, and come back.

MAN: I will.  Have a nice day.

(The Man opens the door and leaves.  He sees a man in the sidewalk with long and dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. The Man turns back and enters the barber shop again)

MAN: You know what?. Barbers do not exist.

BARBER: How can you say that?.  I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!.

MAN: No!. Barbers don’t exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside.

BARBER: Ah, but barbers do exist!. That’s what happens when people do not come to me.

MAN: Exactly, that’s the point!.  God, too, does exist.  Because people do not look to God for help is why there’s so much pain and suffering in the world.

BARBER: Oh, you’re right.  I never thought it that way.  Turning to God or to a barber is a personal decision.

THE END
