How To Introduce Meditation To Your Kids
In today’s world where people’s lives revolve around technology, it’s very easy to be overstimulated. All these digital devices and the need to be productive all the time distract individuals in finding their inner peace. It’s one of the reasons meditation, yoga, and other mindfulness practices have been popular in the past decade. These practices have also been introduced in schools for good reason. Central Bucks, Centennial, Bensalem and other Bucks County school districts are using these practices as they boost the learning of students and ease their stress. Through laying the foundation of mindfulness to children, they’re provided with a tool that will help them fend off negative thoughts and behaviors, build focus, and learn to respect themselves and others.
Watch Kung Fu Panda
“Anything is possible when you have inner peace.” Master Shifu said this to Po in Kung Fu Panda 2. Adults who practice mindfulness practices would certainly agree with this phrase. Children love watching animated movies and the Kung Fu Panda series is a great way to make your children believe in the power of meditation. The children have to be guided so that they will understand that they won’t exactly have the powers of the characters, but they will certainly develop their own. You have to explain how Master Shifu and Po, as well as the other characters, meditate their way to save the day. In this way, you get to pique their interest and curiosity about the practice of meditation.
Practice what you preach
Introducing meditation to your children can also be a bonding experience, no matter how old they are. Anytime the family is engaged in an activity together, you develop a deeper bond with each other. Don’t force the child to join you. Just let them see you practice it every day in the same area in your house. If the whole family practices meditation, then it won’t feel foreign to the children. The kids will also see it as an activity that brings every member of the family together and improves your connection with each other. Remember to accept that the children won’t sit still for a long time and may not be able to meditate for 30 minutes at first.
Use other child-friendly materials
Parents need to make meditation relatable to children. In addition to watching children’s movies that highlight inner peace, you could also use books like Puppy Mind or Meditation Is an Open Sky: Mindfulness for Kids. The story-telling approach is an effective way to connect with children because they love stories.
You could also conduct different activities to introduce it. For instance, put glue and glitter in a jar then fill it water. Shake the jar so that glitters are swirling around. Tell your child that the glitters represent all our thoughts and the jar is like our minds. Then, put the jar down and let it settle. Explain to your child that this is the effect of meditation on our minds, it makes it clearer to think.
Children are the future and they have to be guided to make this world a beautiful place to live in. Imagine if the next generation of adults learned to meditate when they were young. Give children the gift of meditation as they will treasure it for the rest of their lives.
