Hansel and Gretel: The Sweet Escape is a magical play based on the Brothers Grimm’s beloved fairy tale. SCRIPT:

NARRATOR: Hansel and Gretel lived in a tiny cottage in the middle of the forest with their poor father, a woodcutter, and their cruel stepmother.

FATHER: You’ve barely touched your supper, wife. What troubles you?

STEPMOTHER: Now that the children are asleep, I have to tell you something important.

FATHER: What is it?

STEPMOTHER: We don’t have enough food for everyone. Tomorrow morning, we’ll take the children deep into the forest and leave them to their fate.

FATHER: Leave them? To the wolves? Never! They are my blood!

STEPMOTHER: Choose, woodcutter: We keep four hungry mouths here to share one piece of bread, or we lose two, and two survive the winter. It is a bitter choice, but a necessary one.

NARRATOR: She insisted again and again, until the poor woodcutter finally agreed. But Hansel and Gretel weren’t asleep — they had heard everything.

HANSEL: (Whispering) Quiet, Gretel! Don’t cry. I heard every wicked word. We won’t let them. I have a plan.

NARRATOR: The next morning, the stepmother gave each of them a small piece of bread.

STEPMOTHER: Don’t eat this before lunch. It’s all you’ll get today.

HANSEL AND GRETEL: We won’t.

NARRATOR: As they walked into the forest, Hansel secretly dropped breadcrumbs along the path to mark the way home.

STEPMOTHER: Stay here, children. We’ll chop wood and be back before the shadows lengthen. Don’t wander.

NARRATOR: But she never returned. When night fell, Hansel and Gretel were alone.

HANSEL: Come on, Gretel. Let’s find the breadcrumbs and go home.

GRETEL: I can’t see any!

HANSEL: They’re gone!

GRETEL: The birds must have eaten them! What are we going to do?

HANSEL: We’ll find a safe place to stay. Look — there’s a cave over there!

NARRATOR: They stayed in the cave for several days, weak and hungry. Finally, they decided to search for food.

GRETEL: Hansel, look! What’s that little house in the distance?

HANSEL: It looks like it’s made of… candy!

GRETEL: Let’s see!

NARRATOR: The house was covered in chocolate, cookies, and bread.

HANSEL: This is amazing! I’ve never seen anything like it!

GRETEL: And it’s delicious!

NARRATOR: Suddenly, the door creaked open.

WITCH: (Voice like crackling autumn leaves) Who dares to gnaw on a poor old woman’s roof?

HANSEL: Forgive us, ma’am! We’re lost, and we haven’t eaten in days!

WITCH: Oh, poor children! Come inside. I’ll take care of you.

GRETEL: Hansel, wait. There’s something… strange about this place.

HANSEL: Don’t worry, she looks kind.

WITCH: Nonsense, child! I’m just lonely. Come in, come in! You’re both naturally thin—we’ll fix that! I’ll feed you until you bloom!

NARRATOR: But deep inside, Hansel felt something was wrong.

GRETEL: Hansel, why is she being so nice?

HANSEL: She wants to make us fat…

GRETEL: To eat us!

HANSEL AND GRETEL: Oh no!

NARRATOR: The witch was listening behind the door.

WITCH: Too late! You little snoops! Now, into the oven—it’s stoked and waiting!

HANSEL: Wait! It’s too narrow! How can two children fit?

WITCH: Rubbish! An old woman like me fits with ease! See? Watch closely!

NARRATOR: The moment she climbed in, Gretel quickly shut the door and locked it.

HANSEL: Run, Gretel, run!

NARRATOR: They ran out of the candy house and didn’t stop until they reached their old cottage.

HANSEL: We’re finally home!

NARRATOR: Their father opened the door, tears in his eyes.

FATHER: (Sobbing) Hansel! Gretel! My heart is whole again! Your wicked stepmother abandoned me, too. She ran away and never came back!

GRETEL: We were so scared, Father. We just wanted to be home.

HANSEL: We’re not just children anymore, Father. We’re survivors.

FATHER: Forgive me, my dear children.

HANSEL AND GRETEL: We love you, Dad!

NARRATOR: And from that day on, Hansel, Gretel, and their father lived happily ever after.
