DOG:  What’s wrong with you!.   Why do you bite me?.   I’ll eat you!.

ANT:  No, wait!.   I was listening to you and I want to help you.

DOG:  How can you help me?.

ANT:  There’s an animal in the forest who looks a lot like you.  I think he could be your brother.

DOG:  Really?.  Who is he?.   What’s his name?.  What does he do?    .

ANT:  You ask too many questions.  It would be better if you go look for him.  Come on, go now!. You don’t have your chain on!.   Go, before your master returns!.

DOG:  Thanks,  good-bye my friend!.

ANT:  Good-luck!.  (Leaves the stage)

(The Dog walks to the forest.  The Squirrel enters the stage and approaches the Dog)

DOG:  Are you my brother?.

SQUIRREL:  Do I look like you? . Haven’t you seen yourself in the mirror?.

DOG:  Hmmm…no.  An Ant told me that my brother lives here and I came looking for him.

SQUIRREL:  Oh I see, you must be talking about the Wolf.

DOG:  Is that his name?.

SQUIRREL:  Yes, but I don’t think he’s your brother.  Maybe he’s your cousin.

(The Wolf  enters the stage and approaches the Squirrel)

WOLF:  Did you call me?.

SQUIRREL:  I knew you were hiding behind a tree.

DOG:  Are you the wolf?.

WOLF:  Yes, I am.  I heard you were looking for me.

DOG:  An Ant told me that you were my brother.  I feel so lonely.

WOLF:  Mmmm… well, we do look alike.  We have four legs, a tail, and a lot of hair.  Maybe, it could be, but you are fatter and I’m thinner ,even if I am stronger than you.

SQUIRREL:  Well, I better go.  Good-bye!.

(The squirrel leaves the stage)

WOLF:  Do you want something to eat?.

DOG:  Sure, let’s go to your house.

WOLF:  House?.  No, we’ll hunt to  eat.  We can get a hare, you know.  It won’t be easy, but you can help me.

DOG:  I don’t know how to hunt.

WOLF:  Then what do you eat?.

DOG:  My master feeds me.  I like to be with him, and I help him take care of the house.

WOLF:  Well, nobody feeds me!.  I have to hunt to live.  So, let’s hurry up before it gets dark.

DOG:  Please, forgive me, but I can’t help you.

WOLF:  Fine, wait here then. Let me see what I can get for myself.  I’ll be right back.

(The Wolf leaves the stage)

DOG:  This place is not for me.

(The Wolf enters the stage)

WOLF:  Mmmm… it was so delicious!. You don’t know what you just have missed.  Since you already know where I live, now let’s go to your place.

DOG:  (moving its tail)  Yes!.  Let’s go, I want to go back.  I’m hungry and I want to share my food with you.

(The  Wolf and the Dog walk to the dog’s house.  The Wolf sees a cut in the Dog’s neck)

WOLF:  What happened to you in the neck?.

DOG:  It’s nothing.

WOLF:  It’s nothing?.

DOG:  It must be the chain.  Sometimes my master chains me so that I can sleep during the day. Then, at night he takes the chain off so that I can take care of his house.

WOLF:  Why do you have to take care of his house?.

DOG:  There are burglars, you know!.

(They arrive to the Dog’s house)

WOLF:  I must admit you have a beautiful house.

DOG:  Thanks, please, come in.

(They enter the dog’s house)

DOG:  Look, my master left some food for me.  You can eat it if you want to.

WOLF:  Thanks, but I couldn’t live here without any freedom and all the adventures I have in the forest.  I prefer to be hungry, to get wet when it rains, and to be cold, than being a king without freedom.  I’m sorry, but I don’t feel good here in your house.

DOG:  I feel the same thing about the forest. I could never live there!.

WOLF:  I’m glad I met you, but I have to go.

DOG:  Will we still be friends?.

WOLF:  Of course we will!.  You can come and visit me whenever you want to.

DOG:  You too!.

WOLF:   Good bye my friend.

DOG:  Good-bye, brother.

(They hug.  The Wolf leaves the stage)

THE DOG AND THE WOLF

A gaunt Wolf was almost dead with hunger when he happened to meet a House-dog who was passing by.  “Ah, Cousin,” said the Dog. “I knew how it would be; your irregular life will soon be the ruin of you.  Why do you not work steadily as I do, and get your food regularly given to you?” “I would have no objection,” said the Wolf, “if I could only get a place.” “I will easily arrange that for you,” said the Dog; “come with me to my master and you shall share my work.”

So the Wolf and the Dog went towards the town together.  On the way there the Wolf noticed that the hair on a certain part of the Dog’s neck was very much worn away, so he asked him how that had come about.

Oh, it is nothing,” said the Dog.  “That is only the place where the collar is put on at night to keep me chained up; it chafes a bit, but one soon gets used to it.” “Is that all?” said the Wolf.  “Then good-bye to you, Master Dog.”
