Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, and it is a day dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action to protect the environment. It was first celebrated in 1970, and it is now recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, with over a billion people taking part in activities each year.

EARTH DAY HEROES: SAVING OUR PLANET

CHARACTERS:

SARA – A confident and enthusiastic First/Second Grader who loves nature and wants to save the Earth.

BEN – Sara’s best friend and a curious First/Second Grader who joins Sara in her Earth-saving adventure.

JOHNSON – A caring and knowledgeable teacher who guides Sara and Ben on their Earth Day mission.

GREEN – A friendly and knowledgeable environmentalist who educates Sara, Ben, and Ms. Johnson about Earth Day.

MOTHER EARTH – A personification of the Earth, represented by a person wearing a green costume or holding a sign with “Mother Earth” written on it.

(As the curtains open, we see a group of enthusiastic kids gathered around a teacher, Ms. Johnson, who is holding a globe in her hand)

MS. JOHNSON: (excitedly) Welcome, everyone! Today, we’re here to celebrate a very special day – Earth Day! It’s a day when we learn how to take care of our planet and make a difference in protecting it.

KIDS: (cheering) Yay! Earth Day!

SCRIPT:

(As the play begins, Sara and Ben are chatting excitedly in the school playground)

SARA: (jumping up and down) Ben, guess what? Tomorrow is Earth Day!

BEN: (curiously) What’s Earth Day, Sara?

SARA: (grinning) It’s a special day when we celebrate our planet Earth and learn how to take care of it!

BEN: (nodding) That sounds cool! I want to help too!

SARA: (clapping) Great! Let’s do something awesome to save the Earth!

(They go to their teacher, Ms. Johnson, who is preparing for the Earth Day activities)

SARA: (eagerly) Ms. Johnson, can we do something special for Earth Day?

JOHNSON: (smiling) Of course! I have some exciting activities planned. We’ll learn about recycling, conservation, and how to protect the environment.

BEN: (curiously) What’s recycling?

JOHNSON: (explaining) Recycling is when we turn old things into new things. Like turning plastic bottles into new plastic bottles or paper into new paper.

SARA: (nodding) Recycling is a great way to help the Earth!

(They continue their conversation when Mr. Green, the environmentalist, enters)

GREEN: (cheerfully) Hello, everyone! I heard you’re celebrating Earth Day!

SARA: (excitedly) Yes, we are! Tell us more about Earth Day, Mr. Green!

BEN: (curiously) Yeah, what can we do to help?

GREEN: (enthusiastically) Earth Day is a special day to remind us to take care of our planet. We can reduce, reuse, and recycle to help the environment. We can also conserve energy and water, plant trees, and take care of animals and their habitats.

SARA: (determined) I want to do all of that and more to save the Earth!

BEN: (nodding) Me too!

(As they continue their discussion, Mother Earth enters, looking sad)

MOTHER EARTH: (sighing) Children, I’m glad you want to help. Our planet is in trouble. There’s pollution, deforestation, and climate change happening. We need your help to make a difference.

SARA: (determined) We won’t let you down, Mother Earth! We’ll do everything we can to save you!

BEN: (nodding) Yeah, we want to protect our planet!

(They come up with a plan to clean up the school grounds, plant trees, and spread awareness about Earth Day in their community. They work together, with the help of Mr. Green and Ms. Johnson, to carry out their plan)

(On Earth Day, they hold a school assembly to share their efforts and encourage others to join the cause)

SARA: (addressing the audience) Today is Earth Day, a special day to celebrate our planet and learn how to take care of it! We’ve been working hard to make a difference and help our environment.

BEN: (nodding) That’s right! We cleaned up the school grounds, planted trees, and spread awareness about Earth Day in our community.

JOHNSON: (proudly) These kids have been true Earth Day champions, and they’ve inspired all of us to do our part in protecting the Earth!

GREEN: (applauding) Bravo! You’ve shown that even young kids can make a big impact on our planet.

MOTHER EARTH: (smiling) Thank you, children! Your efforts are making a difference, and I’m grateful for your help in protecting me, and our home.

SARA: (grinning) We’re just getting started! We’ll continue to recycle, conserve, and take care of our planet every day!

BEN: (determined) Yeah! We’ll do our best to be good stewards of the Earth and make a positive impact on our environment.

JOHNSON: (proudly) I’m so proud of all of you. Remember, every day can be Earth Day when we take small steps to protect our planet.

MOTHER EARTH: (smiling) Well done, kids! Your efforts on Earth Day and every day make a big difference in protecting our planet.

GREEN: (applauding) Yes, you’ve shown that you are Earth Day superheroes, and we’re proud of each one of you!

SARA: (grinning) We’ll keep working to protect our planet and make it a better place for all living creatures.

BEN: (determined) Absolutely! Earth Day is just the beginning of our journey to save the Earth.

JOHNSON: (proudly) Thank you, kids, for being such amazing stewards of the Earth. Remember, every day can be Earth Day when we take care of our planet!

(They all cheer and clap as the play comes to an end, leaving a message of hope and determination to protect our planet)
