MARY THE HEN

 

 

CHARACTERS:

MARY – MOTHER HEN

SIX CHICKS

MR. CAT

MRS. DUCK

 

SCRIPT:

 

(Mary is  in the front door of her house waiting for her Six Chicks. She has her purse and the house keys in her hand)

 

MARY: Are you ready?.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

MARY: Let’s go!. (She and her Six Chicks go out.  She closes the door and they start walking) Let’s hurry up, it’s a beautiful day!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

MARY: Today we will go to the river!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep,cheep, cheep.

 

(They walk toward the river.  Mr. Cat is sleeping under a tree)

 

MARY: Good morning, Mr. Cat.

 

MR. CAT:  (opens his eyes) Good morning, dear Mary.

 

MARY: It’s a beautiful morning!.   We are going to the river.  Would you like to come with us?.

 

MR. CAT: No, thank you, I am very tired.

 

MARY:  Well, then have a nice day.

 

MR. CAT: Good-bye.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(They go to Mrs. Duck´s house. She knocks at the door)

 

MRS. DUCK: Who is it?.

 

MARY: It’s me, Mary.

 

MRS. DUCK: Come in.  The door is open.

 

(Mary and her Six Chicks enter the house. Mrs. Duck is sitting on the sofa in the living room)

 

MARY:  (to Mrs. Duck)  Would you like to come with us to the river?.

 

MRS. DUCK: No, thank you, my dear friend Mary.  It’s a cold day.  I prefer to stay here.

 

MARY: Fine, we will go alone.  (to the Six Chicks) Come on my little babies.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(Mary and her Six Chicks leave the house, and head to the river)

 

MARY: This is a wonderful place for you to play!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(The  Six Chicks play for a while)

 

MARY: Now go to the river and drink some fresh water.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(The Six Chicks go the river and drink water)

 

MARY: Come here.  It’s time to read a short story.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(Mary takes out a story book from her purse and starts reading)

 

MARY: Once upon a time there was a little cat who lived in the…(She looks at her watch) Oh my, it’s late and you have to go to school!.   Let’s go back to the farm!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(They go back to their house)

 

MARY: Hurry up!.  Pick up your backpacks!. (The  Six Chicks take their backpacks and they go out.  Mary closes the door with the keys and they walk toward school.  In her hurry, Mary drops the keys). Oh, I can’t waste anymore time!. (She bends down to pick up the keys.   She sees some wheat grains on the ground.  She picks up the grains) This is wonderful!.  Today is my lucky day!.  I will plant them right now, but first I have to take my babies to school!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(She takes the chicks to school.  Afterwards she goes to see Mr. Cat who is lying under the tree)

 

MARY: Mr. Cat!.  Mr. Cat!.

 

MR. CAT: Mmmm, yes?.

 

MARY: Look what I found!.

 

MR. CAT: What is it?.

 

MARY: I found these wheat grains.  Would you like to help me plant them?.

 

MR. CAT: Not right now. I am tired!.

 

MARY: Very well, maybe Mrs. Duck will help me.

 

(She goes to Mrs. Duck´s house.  She knocks at the door)

 

MRS. DUCK: Who is it?.

 

MARY: It’s me, Mary!.

 

MRS. DUCK: Come in, the door is open.

 

(Mary enters the house.  Mrs. Duck is sitting on the sofa)

 

MARY: Mrs. Duck, Look!.  I just found these wheat grains, and I was thinking that maybe you would like to help me plant them.

 

MRS. DUCK: I already told you that I am cold.  I prefer to stay here!.

 

MARY: Sorry, Mrs. Duck.

 

MRS. DUCK: Good-bye.

 

(Mary  goes to her house and plants them in her backyard.  Her Six Chicks come back from school)

 

MARY: Come to see where I planted the wheat grains!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(She takes them outside.  She shows them the place where the grain is planted)

 

MARY: All we have to do is water the grains every day!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(They water the grains .  She cuts the wheat)

 

MARY: Now, I´ll take the wheat to the mill,  come on, my babies let’s ask my neighbors to help me.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(She finds Mr. Cat lying under a tree)

 

MARY: Mr. Cat!.  Mr. Cat!.

 

MR. CAT: What can I do for you?.

 

MARY: I have to take the wheat to the mill, will you help me?.

 

MR. CAT: My dear Mary, I can’t go with you because I´m very tired.

 

(She leaves very sad)

 

MARY: Maybe Mrs. Duck will help me.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(She goes to Mrs. Duck´s  house.  She knocks at the door)

 

MRS. DUCK: Who is it?.

 

MARY: It’s me, Mary.

 

MRS. DUCK: Come in, the door is open.

 

(Mary and her Six Chicks enter the house. Mrs. Duck is sitting on the sofa)

 

MARY: Mrs. Duck would you like to go with me to the mill?.

 

MRS. DUCK: Dear Mary, it’s very cold.  I prefer to stay here.  Maybe some other time.

 

MARY: Good-bye.  Come on, my babies, let’s go to the mill.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(Mary and her Six Chicks leave the house and they go the the mill.  They go back to their house with a bag of flour and she bakes the bread. When the bread is cooked she takes a piece of it in her hand)

 

MARY: This bread is delicious!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

MARY: Now we will go to see Mr. Cat and Mrs. Duck.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(Mr. Cat is lying under a tree)

 

MARY: Mr. Cat!.  Mr. Cat!.

 

MR. CAT: Now what, Mary?.

 

MARY: Would you like to eat some of this delicious bread?.

 

MR. CAT: Oh, yes Mary, sure I would!.

 

MARY: Oh no, because when I needed your help you didn’t help me!.  Besides, you must be very tired!.   So, only my chicks and I will eat the bread.  Good-bye!.

 

CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(Mary and her chicks go to Mrs. Duck´s house.  She knocks at the door)

 

MRS. DUCK: Who is it?,

 

MARY: It’s me, Mary.

 

MRS. DUCK: Come in, the door is open.

 

(Mary and her  Six Chicks enter the house.  Mrs. Duck is sitting on the sofa)

 

MARY: Mrs. Duck, would you like to eat some of this delicious bread?.

 

MRS. DUCK: Oh, sure!.  It smells so delicious!.

 

MARY:  Well no, you won’t have some.  When I needed your help, you were not there for me. So, only my chicks and I will eat the bread!.  Good-bye!.

 

SIX CHICKS: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

 

(Mary and her Six Chicks leave the stage)
