SOPHIE: I promise!.

MARTHA: John was such a generous person. There is no hurting, no suffering, and no pain in Heaven, please be comforted by the fact that he is in a far better place now. You need to sit down, you’ve been standing here for hours holding that burning candle.
SOPHIE: No, I prefer to stay here until this candle burns itself out, and it’s flame is totally extinguished. I made a promise to John, and I intend to keep it!.
MARTHA: Why did you make that promise?.
SOPHIE: It’s just a proof of my love for him.
MARTHA: What a beautiful promise! (She moves away and sits).
