SCRIPT:

(Setting: In a lush forest clearing. A great, ancient oak tree stands center stage. Mother Nature sits under the tree, serene and still. The colors are spread around the stage, in small groups. Suddenly, Color Green and Color Blue step forward, their faces tight with annoyance.)

COLOR BLUE: That’s absurd. I am the very breath of peace.

COLOR GREEN: ( Scoffing, he gestures grandly to the trees around them. ) Peace? You’re just… empty. I am life itself!

( Mother Nature rises slowly. The other colors fall silent, watching her.)

MOTHER NATURE: What is the matter, my children? Why are you shouting?

(Color Blue and Color Green approach her, their postures stubborn and defensive.)

COLOR BLUE: He claims he is the most important color. ( He looks at Mother Nature with an air of disbelief. ) But surely, everyone knows that it’s me. I am everywhere—the sky, the oceans. I am tranquility and deep thought.

COLOR GREEN:  (He gestures with pride to his own body and then sweeps his arm across the stage. ) Deep thought? You’re a backdrop! I am the sign of life, of hope! Look at the grass and the trees, the very dress you wear, Mother Nature! Without me, the world is a barren, dead wasteland. I feed the animals; I breathe life into the land!

( A low murmur of protest and agreement ripples through the other colors.)

COLOR YELLOW: (He bursts into the center of the stage, hands on his hips, laughing loudly. ) Ha, ha, ha! Oh, you two are so serious! You sound like a pair of old grumps!

COLOR GREEN: This is not funny, Yellow!

COLOR YELLOW: Oh, but it is! I’m the color of happiness and sunshine, the warmth that makes you all feel alive! I give the world laughter! What’s the point of life if there’s no joy? The sun, the buttercups, the gold in Mother Nature’s hair—that’s all me! Ha, ha, ha! (He spins around, full of energy. )

COLOR ORANGE: (He takes a hesitant step forward, speaking softly and thoughtfully. ) Mother Nature, may I speak? I don’t mean to boast, but I am the color of health and strength. Carrots, pumpkins, papayas—I carry the most vital nutrients. Without me, there is no nourishment.

COLOR RED: (She explodes forward, cutting Orange off. Her movements are quick and sharp. ) Nourishment? Who cares about nourishment when there’s no passion! I am fire, blood, and love! The courage of a hero, the fury of a storm! Look at Mother Nature’s lips—I am her passion! I am the most important! Without me, life is just… dull!

COLOR PURPLE: (He glides forward, his posture straight and formal, his hands clasped behind his back. ) I believe you are all missing the point. Importance isn’t about passion or nourishment. It’s about authority. I am the color of royalty and wisdom. Kings and bishops wear me. People don’t question me; they obey.

COLOR YELLOW: (He snorts and pretends to be a dutiful soldier, standing at attention and saluting with a silly grin. ) Oh, you’re the color of obedience? Well, no one’s obeying you right now!

(The colors descend into a cacophony of insults and self-praise. They push and shove each other slightly. The air crackles with their angry energy. The lighting on stage begins to dim, and the vibrant colors of the set fade to a muted gray. )

COLOR INDIGO: Please. Stop.

COLOR BLUE: (Exasperated, he turns on Indigo. ) If you are the color of silence, Indigo, then be quiet!

COLOR INDIGO: (He holds up his hands, a quiet plea. He speaks slowly) I know you barely notice me, but you need me. I am thought and reflection, the stillness of twilight and deep water. Without me, you are all just… noise. You are superficial. You need me for balance, for inner peace. You are so busy competing, you’re draining the light from everything around you.

(Suddenly, a great thunderclap booms. The lights flicker and dim dramatically. The colors all flinch and fall silent, clutching each other in fear. The sky darkens, and a powerful, imposing figure named Rain enters the scene. )

RAIN: (With a voice that is both a rumble of thunder and a gentle patter. ) You foolish, foolish children. Look at what you’ve done. Your fighting has made the world a dull and gray place. Do you not understand? Each of you was made for a special purpose, unique and different. You are not meant to dominate. You were meant to complement.

COLOR GREEN: (He bows his head, humbled. ) We are sorry, Rain.

RAIN: Sorry is not enough. You must understand the truth. From this day forward, when I wash the earth, you will stretch across the sky together, each in your proper place.

(The colors look at each other, a new understanding dawning in their eyes. They stop clinging to each other and begin to form a line. Tentatively at first, then with purpose, they join hands, a hesitant line of light. )

RAIN: This great bow will be a reminder of your unity. It will remind humanity of love, peace, happiness, strength, wisdom, and reflection.

MOTHER NATURE: That is the true purpose of the rainbow. It is not about one color, but all of them. It is a sign of hope, a reminder that together, you are so much more than you could ever be apart. Now, let your light shine.

(The colors form an arch, their hands still joined, their light mixing and blending into a perfect, beautiful arc across the stage.)

The play The Colors of the Rainbow: A Tale of Unity reminds us that strength lies not in competing, but in joining forces. Each color—like each person—has a unique role to play in the world. When we learn to appreciate our differences and work together, we can build something brighter, stronger, and more hopeful than anything we could achieve alone. Just like the rainbow, unity makes life shine with all its beauty.

Moral of the story: True beauty comes from unity—when we respect and value each other, we can create something greater than ourselves.

Moral Values:

  • The Value of Unity: The rainbow exists because the colors work together. True strength comes from cooperation, not competition.
  • Respect for Differences: Each color is unique and important. Just like people, everyone has something valuable to contribute.
  • The Dangers of Pride: Arrogance and selfishness lead to conflict and loss. Only humility and teamwork restore balance.
  • Hope and Renewal: The rainbow is a symbol of peace after the storm, reminding us that harmony can create a brighter future.
