The Selfish Hummingbird — A heartwarming play about generosity and redemption, where Misty the hummingbird learns that true abundance comes from sharing and caring for others.

The Selfish Hummingbird is a touching children’s play about sharing, kindness, and redemption. Set in a peaceful garden, the story follows Misty, a hummingbird who selfishly guards a nectar feeder, believing it belongs only to her. As other hummingbirds struggle with hunger, Misty’s refusal to share leads her into loneliness and exhaustion. Through compassion and forgiveness, Misty learns that true abundance comes not from keeping everything for oneself, but from caring for others. This play gently teaches children that generosity can transform not only a community, but also the heart of the one who gives.

SCRIPT:

Props: A hummingbird feeder filled with red nectar, a small nest bed.

Setting: A lush house garden.

Act I

(The stage features a large tree in the center. A hummingbird feeder hangs from one of the branches. Misty perches on a tiny branch directly above the feeder, looking alert. Rainy enters, flying toward the feeder.)

MISTY: (Diving and chasing Rainy away) Get away from here! This is my food!

RAINY: No, this food is for everyone! It doesn’t belong to you.

(Shiny enters. Misty immediately darts toward her to keep her away.)

SHINY: You spend all day on that branch, Misty. Always guarding your “treasure.” I’m hungry!

RAINY: We are all hungry!

MISTY: That’s not my problem. Look for food somewhere else!

RAINY: (Sighing) That nectar won’t last forever. What will you do then?

MISTY: Don’t you know? This feeder is never empty. The Great Invisible Hummingbird keeps it full for me.

SHINY: Who is the Invisible Hummingbird?

MISTY: He is the creator of all hummingbirds. He refills this with fresh nectar every night while the world sleeps.

RAINY: If the nectar is never-ending, why won’t you let us drink? Our siblings are weak. There is no other food nearby.

MISTY: I don’t care! I told you, find your own food and leave me in peace!

SHINY: Please, Misty. Help us now, and we will be there for you when you need us.

MISTY: I don’t need anyone. I don’t need friends. Now, get out of my sight!

SPEEDY: (Entering) You are so stuck up!

RAINY: We don’t understand why you’re doing this, but we are leaving. Stay alone, if that’s what you want. We just hope you never need us. Goodbye.

(Rainy, Shiny, Whistler, and Speedy exit. Chirpy, Windy, and Sunny enter. Misty immediately chases them.)

MISTY: Away! All of you!

CHIRPY: You are so selfish!

WINDY: (Fluttering aggressively) Who do you think you are?

SUNNY: She thinks she’s the only one the Invisible Hummingbird protects! We’ve heard your stories, Misty. They’re ridiculous!

MISTY: They are true! Now fly away!

(The other hummingbirds exit. Misty returns to her branch, looking exhausted but defiant.)

ACT II

(Weeks have passed. Misty is on her branch, looking ragged and weak.)

MISTY: I have spent so many weeks guarding this feeder. I am so tired of fighting… I don’t even want to eat anymore. If only they would go away forever, I could finally have some peace.

(Misty sways and falls from the branch to the ground, unconscious. Rainy enters cautiously. Seeing Misty isn’t moving, she approaches the feeder to drink, but stops when she sees Misty on the ground.)

RAINY: Misty? (She flies down) Oh no! She’s starving herself just to keep it from us.

(Rainy rushes offstage and returns with the others. They gather around Misty.)

SHINY: We have to do something!

WHISTLER: Let’s bring the nectar to her!

(The hummingbirds take nectar into their beaks and gently drop it into Misty’s beak. Chirpy, Windy, and Sunny carefully lift her and carry her offstage.)

ACT III

(Misty wakes up in a soft nest. The other hummingbirds are perched nearby.)

MISTY: (Weakly) What happened? Where am I?

RAINY: We found you lying under the feeder, Misty.

SHINY: We couldn’t just leave you there. We decided to take care of you.

MISTY: (Looking ashamed) You saved me? After how I treated you? You’ve taught me a lesson I’ll never forget. I see now how important it is to share… and how much I truly need friends.

SUNNY: Are you going to go back to guarding the feeder?

MISTY: No. From now on, I will travel far and wide to find hungry hummingbirds. I will lead them all to the feeder, so no one ever goes hungry again.

(The hummingbirds gather around Misty in a group hug.)

ACT IV

(Years Have Passed. The Garden Is Peaceful. Chirpy, Windy, and Sunny are drinking happily from the feeder while Misty watches from her branch with a smile.)

CHIRPY: Misty was right. There is a great force that keeps this feeder full for us.

WINDY: She has changed so much since that day. She is the most generous soul in the garden.

SUNNY: All the birds love and respect her now.

CHIRPY: (To Misty) Misty, thank you. Because of you, generations of our kind have survived.

(Misty smiles but doesn’t answer. She slowly closes her eyes and slips from the branch, falling to the ground. The birds rush to her.)

WINDY: Misty! Wake up!

RAINY: (Checking on her, then looking up sadly) It’s no use. Her journey is over. She’s gone.

(Suddenly, a bright, warm light shines down on Misty. The hummingbirds gasp as her body begins to glow and slowly rises into the air.)

SHINY: Look! She’s shining like the sun!

WHISTLER: A supernatural force is lifting her to the sky!

ALL: It was true! The Mighty Invisible Hummingbird exists!

SPEEDY: And he is taking her home.
