Banshee – La Mujer de las Lagrimas
Irlanda es un país que se caracteriza por sus hermosos y silvestres paisajes, así que no debe sorprender que en sus alrededores boscosos se encuentre algo parecido a un fantasma femenino, y ese algo, tan natural en Irlanda, se llama Banshee.
Este espíritu forma parte del folklore irlandés desde el siglo VIII, cuando surgieron las primeras historias de mujeres contratadas para cantar canciones de lamento en los funerales. La presencia de estas mujeres era muy importante en los ritos funerarios para asegurar que el alma del fallecido llegara al “Otro Mundo” de la manera más tranquila posible. Sin embargo, el rol principal de estas mujeres plañideras profesionales era que la comunidad expresara públicamente su tristeza, convirtiéndose así en un tipo de terapeuta del dolor. En ese tiempo, la música con frecuencia estaba conectaba con los espíritus y las hadas que se creía habitaban en los bosques. Se cuenta que en una ocasión un hada empezó a cantar de dolor antes de que la noticia sobre la muerte de una persona que había fallecido lejos de allí llegara a sus familiares. Por lo tanto, el llanto de esa Banshee fue el primero que escucharon por la muerte de un ser querido.
Banshee también es conocida como “Hada Femenina”, “La Dama de la Muerte”, “La Mujer de la Tristeza”, “El Espíritu del Aire”, “La Mensajera del Otro Mundo”, “El Ángel de la Muerte”, y “La Mujer del Sepulcro”. Es el fantasma de una mujer que alguna vez vivió, y que está unida a una familia de antiguo linaje irlandés cuyos apellidos empezaban con “O” o “Mac”. Como un espíritu ancestral, ella no solo aparece para predecir la muerte de un familiar, sino que ayuda a que las personas se preparen para verla partir hacia el mundo espiritual
No siempre la representación de las Banshees es la misma, a veces aparecen como jóvenes hermosas y evanescentes y sin embargo también pueden ser representadas como mujeres envejecidas o ancianas. Llevan vestidos largos de diferentes colores, pero predominan en sus vestimentas los negros, blancos, plateados, o dorados.
En cuanto a su rostro sus ojos destacan, a veces son negros, grises o azules, pero siempre están brillando intensamente como si tuvieran estrellas, en su expresión puede verse que están llenos de dolor y compasión. La apariencia de sus cuerpos transmite desesperación y desconsuelo, aunque algunas veces igualmente pueden toman la forma de algo diabólico, extremadamente aterrador. Generalmente están ocultas, pero si se les puede escuchar de diferentes formas, algunas anuncian su llegada con gemidos, otras con suspiros o gritos pero cuando es a través de su llanto se siente su angustia y desconsuelo. Es seguro que también pueden ser escuchadas aplaudiendo, golpeando las paredes o ventanas, mientras que a veces suenan como si hicieran destrozos produciendo ruidos estruendosos y atemorizantes. Es indiscutible que lo que causa mayor temor en aquellos que la escuchan, sucede cuando a lo lejos o a veces muy cerca se escuchan sus carcajadas y aparecen riéndose de manera estremecedora, algunos dicen satánica, es tan horrible que congela la sangre a quien oye tan espantosa risa pues parece burlarse de los terribles presagios y desagradables sucesos o sorpresas que están por acontecer.
De todo esto puede deducirse que hay una división entre estos espíritus y pueden reconocerse dos tipos principales: la Banshee Amistosa y la Banshee Malvada. La primera muestra tristeza cuando llega, ya que durante su vida estaba muy unida a la familia, y como los amaba tanto, se aparece cantando dulcemente para anunciar que el ángel de la muerte está cerca. La Banshee Malvada en cambio se aparece gritando con una alegría demoniaca, ya que mientras estaba viva era enemiga de la familia, por lo que tiene una buena razón para odiar a todos sus miembros. Se conoce en esa región irlandesa el caso de una familia noble que estuvo siendo visitada por este tipo de Banshee. La joven fue asesinada por un miembro de la familia, en el momento en que exhaló su último aliento, ella maldijo a su asesino y le prometió que estaría con él y su familia para siempre. El tiempo paso y al correr de los años el crimen fue borrando por el olvido, hasta que una noche mientras se encontraban sentados frente a la chimenea, escucharon unos gritos afuera del castillo, todos corrieron a ver lo que sucedía, pero en la oscuridad no pudieron alcanzar a ver nada, ni a nadie. Los gritos se escucharon durante toda la noche como si el castillo estuviera poseído por demonios, y fue entonces cuando el infeliz joven reconoció en el llanto, la voz de la mujer a la que había arrebatado la vida cruelmente. El día siguiente por la noche, en el mismo momento en que volvieron a escucharse los gritos y gemidos desgarrados del espíritu, el mismo criminal fue asesinado por uno de sus soldados. Desde entonces, a decir de la gente, ella nunca ha dejado de avisarle a la familia, con llantos de venganza y alegría, cuando ha llegado la hora de la muerte de alguno de ellos.
El canto de esta “Mujer de las Lágrimas” comúnmente se escucha durante la noche, y casi siempre lo hace un día o dos antes de la muerte que anuncia. Lo más extraño es que ella nunca es vista ni escuchada por la persona cuya muerte predice. Cuentan que, en cierta ocasión, una joven mujer se comprometió para casarse con el novio al que tanto amaba. Cuando estaban en la iglesia el joven con quien se esposaría escucho un llanto desolador, entonces salió de la iglesia espantado abandonando a su novia frente al altar. Como era de esperarse, ella murió de decepción un día después, y la noche anterior a su muerte, la canción fue escuchada afuera de la ventana de la cabaña de su madre.
Así es Banshee, una vez que se escucha por toda la Isla Esmeralda, no se puede dudar de su existencia. Todos saben que esos sonidos misteriosos que se escuchan en la distancia, perturbando el silencio en la noche, no son las ramas de los árboles ni los animales salvajes, sino sus gemidos de angustia, sus dolorosos cantos presagiando sin duda un desenlace fatal.
Algunos poetas la han descrito aterradoramente en sus versos:
“Banshee borda una historia terrible
dentro de una historia triste
Avisa a veces con dolor
a veces con gritos desgarrados
que la muerte no está nunca tan lejos
que no se pueda escuchar cerca
Seguirá sin descanso
pintado llantos y gemidos en el velo transparente y oscuro

BANSHEE – THE WOMAN OF TEARS
Ireland has many beautiful wild landscapes where a female ghost appears in its wooded surroundings. And that female ghost is called Banshee.
This spirit has been part of Irish folklore since the 8th century, when the first stories of women hired to sing lament songs at funerals arose. The presence of these women was relevant in the funeral rites to ensure that the soul reached the “Other World” in the calmest way possible. However, the principal role of these professional mourning women was for the community to publicly express their sadness, thus becoming a type of grief therapist. At that time, people believed that music connected the spirits and fairies that inhabited the forests. People said that a fairy began to sing in pain before the news about the death of a person who had died far away reached their relatives. Therefore, the cry of that Banshee was the first thing they heard before the passing of a loved one.
Banshee also is called: The Female Fairy, The Lady of Death, The Woman of Sadness, The Spirit of the Air, The Messenger of the Other World, The Angel of Death, and The Woman of the Sepulcher. It is the ghost of a woman who once lived and is attached to a family of ancient Irish lineage whose last names began with O or Mac. As an ancestral spirit, she not only appears to predict the death of a family member but helps people prepare to see her depart for the spirit world.
The representation of the Banshees is not always the same. Sometimes these ghosts may appear as beautiful young ladies but can also take the shape of old women wearing long dresses of different colors, but black, white, silver, or gold predominate in their clothing.
As for their faces, their eyes stand out. Sometimes they are black, gray, or blue, but they are always brightly shining as if they have stars, and at the same time, they are full of pain and compassion. The appearance of their bodies transmits despair and grief, although sometimes they can also take the form of something devilish, extremely terrifying. They generally hide, but people can hear them in different ways. Some announce their arrival with moans, others with sighs or screams, but when they cry, their anguish and despair are felt by those nearby. It is for sure that some can hear them clapping their hands, hitting the walls, or breaking the windows, while sometimes they sound like they are smashing and making thunderous and frightening noises. It is indisputable that what causes the greatest fear is when their laughter sounds horrifying. Some say satanic, and it is so horrible that it freezes the blood of those who listen to her because it seems to mock the terrible omens and unpleasant events or surprises that are about to happen.
From all this it can be deduced that there is a division between these spirits. There are two types: the Friendly Banshee and the Evil Banshee. The first one shows sadness when she arrives, since when she was alive was very close to the family, and because of her love, she appears singing sweetly to announce that the angel of death is near. The Evil Banshee instead appears screaming with demonic joy since while she was alive, she was an enemy of the family, so she has a good reason to hate all its members.
There is a case of a noble family visited by this type of Banshee in that Irish region. A family member killed the young woman, and when she took her last breath, she cursed her killer and promised she would be with him and his family forever. Time passed, and people forgot the crime. One evening, while they were sitting in front of the fireplace, they heard screams outside the castle. They ran to see what was happening, but it was dark, and they couldn’t see anything or anyone. They heard screams all night as if demons possessed the castle. Then, the unfortunate young man recognized in his tears the voice of the woman whose life he had cruelly taken. The following evening, they again heard the screams and torn moans of the spirit, and at that precise moment, the soldiers killed the criminal. Since then, according to people, she has never stopped telling the family, with tears of revenge and joy, when the time has come for one of them to die.
The song of this “Woman of Tears” is commonly heard at night, a day or two before the death she announces. The strangest thing is that she is never seen or heard by the person whose death she predicts. They say that, on one occasion, a young woman got engaged to marry the man she loved. When they were in church, the young man with whom she would marry heard a devastating cry, then he left the church, frightened, leaving his girlfriend in front of the altar. Unsurprisingly, she died of disappointment a day later, and the night before she died, people said they heard the song outside her mother’s cabin window.
