SCRIPT:
Act I
(The stage is dark, lit only by soft, twinkling lights representing the night sky. The Star stands center stage, looking around excitedly. The Little Stars are clustered together in the back, whispering and giggling. The Sun peeks out from the side of the stage, glowing softly.)
SUN: (Surprised, a little worried) Star, what are you doing here so early? You’re supposed to be asleep.
STAR: (Jumping slightly, then moving closer to the Sun) I know… but I couldn’t sleep. I wanted to talk to you… That’s why I stayed up.
SUN: (Sighs, a little curious) What about?
STAR: (Leans in, as if sharing a secret) About the Moon… have you ever talked to her?
SUN: (Frowns, looks away wistfully) No… I wish I had. I see her for just a few moments sometimes… but she never stays. I only get to say hello, and she only gets to say goodbye… and then she’s gone. Sometimes when I wake up… she’s already left.
STAR: (A big smile spreads across their face) Would you like to meet her? I mean… really, really talk to her?
SUN: (Looking hopeful) Yes! I really want to meet her! She’s so lovely… so bright… so shiny… so… perfect.
STAR: Do you want to know something? The other day, she told me she thinks you’re very handsome.
SUN: (A wide smile appears on their face) Really? Wow! You just made my day!
STAR: (Suddenly looks at the Little Stars, who are beckoning to them) Oh, I have to go! My sisters are waiting for me. I’ll tell her you say hi tonight. (Star starts to run offstage, the Little Stars scattering ahead of them)
SUN: (Reaching out a hand, a sense of urgency in their voice) No, wait!
(The Star and the Little Stars pause at the edge of the stage, looking back. The Sun takes a breath.)
SUN: (Calls out with all their heart) Tell her also… that I love her.
(The Star and the Little Stars give the Sun a knowing nod and then quickly exit)
Act II
(The Sun stands in the middle of the stage, looking a little glum. A loud Rooster enters from the side, strutting confidently.)
SUN: Oh, Moon… You’re so beautiful… I wish I could see you closer… and touch you… and hug you… and…
(The Rooster crows loudly, puffing out their chest.)
SUN: Can you please be quiet?
ROOSTER: No… I’m doing my job, just like you do yours.
SUN: You call waking people up a job?
ROOSTER: At least I’m doing something! All you do is stand there and do nothing.
(A puffy Cloud drifts onto the stage and hovers near the Sun.)
CLOUD: (To the Rooster) I heard what you said. Leave him alone!
ROOSTER: (Stops pecking and glares at the Cloud) What are you going to do about it?
CLOUD: I could cry… You know… and get you all wet!
SUN: Stop it… please… I’m not in a good mood today.
CLOUD: (Drifts closer to the Sun) Why? What’s wrong with you?
ROOSTER: (Struts over to the Sun, suddenly serious) Tell us, and maybe we can help you.
SUN: I think I’m in love.
CLOUD: Oh! Who is the lucky one?
SUN: It’s someone I only get to see for a few seconds every day… and then she leaves.
ROOSTER: (Puffs out their chest, as if they knew all along) I know who she is! It’s the Moon!
CLOUD: (Whispering to the Sun) Is it?
SUN: Yes, it is. I could never lie to you.
ROOSTER: (Turns to the Cloud, then back to the Sun) Well… I have good news for you!
CLOUD: (Impatient) What is it?
ROOSTER: (Chuckles, shaking their head) Obviously, you don’t know what day today is!
CLOUD: Well, my birthday is on…
ROOSTER: (Interrupts loudly) Silence!
CLOUD: (Looks confused) What did I say?
SUN: (Leaning forward, full of hope) Come on, Rooster… what’s the news?
ROOSTER: Today… my dear friend… You will get to see your beautiful Moon.
SUN: (Eyes widening in disbelief) What?!
ROOSTER: Yes! She’s coming to see you.
SUN: To see… me?! How do you know?
ROOSTER: Today, there will be a solar eclipse!
SUN: Oh, I totally forgot about it!
CLOUD: (Drifts over, looking confused) A solar eclipse? What’s that?
ROOSTER: A solar eclipse is when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth!
CLOUD: So?
ROOSTER: That means that the Sun and the Moon will have a few minutes to talk!
CLOUD: Oh… I see. So?
ROOSTER: (Turns to the Sun, giving up on the Cloud) Never mind.
SUN: (Grins from ear to ear, twirling with joy) I’m going to be able to talk to her… and maybe I could even kiss her! My dream will come true!
CLOUD: (To the Rooster) He really loves her.
ROOSTER: Yeah, he does. (Looks up at the sky, a change in the lighting begins) It’s getting dark… she’s coming.
CLOUD: What should I do?
ROOSTER: We’d better leave. They need to be alone.
(The Cloud and the Rooster exit quietly, leaving the Sun alone on the stage. The light begins to dim.)
SUN: I’m so nervous!
(A soft, silvery light appears as the Moon enters from the opposite side of the stage. She moves gracefully and stands directly in front of the Sun. They are now face-to-face, surrounded by a ring of light.)
MOON: (In a soft, ethereal voice) Hello.
SUN: We finally meet. I wanted so much to talk to you… to be near you.
MOON: Me too.
SUN: Really?
MOON: Yes! This is incredible. (She slowly lifts her hand as if to touch him) I hope this moment will last forever.
SUN: You’re so beautiful. No wonder all humans fall in love just by looking at you. You inspire the most beautiful songs and the most profound poems. I love to watch you dance upon the ocean!
MOON: (Smiling) And you… You give life to everything that exists! Right now… I feel your warmth on my face, and I believe that everything is possible. You make me feel so alive!
SUN: (Stepping closer) I love you!
MOON: So do I! (They embrace. After a moment, the Moon begins to slowly, gently move away from the Sun.)
SUN: (Reaching out a hand) Please, don’t leave me!
MOON: I have to… just remember… we will meet again thousands of times. For you and me… time is infinite.
(The Moon continues to drift away, her light fading until she is gone. The stage is bright again, and the Sun is alone.)
SUN: I’ll be waiting for you… always.
