Act I – At a Public Square
(The stage shows a colorful public square. The Fortune Teller sits behind a table draped in a red cloth. Tarot cards are spread out on the table. Beneath it, there’s a small box with a bottle of “magical” water. Two empty chairs face the table. Girl 1 and Girl 2 enter and notice the Fortune Teller.)
FORTUNE TELLER: (smiling) Do you wish to know what destiny has in store for you?
(Girl 1 and Girl 2 stop, intrigued.)
GIRL 1: Can you really see the future?
FORTUNE TELLER: Of course! I was born with this rare gift. I can read your energy fields—or, if you prefer, my tarot cards can reveal your destiny.
GIRL 1: (to Girl 2) What do you think?
GIRL 2: I’d love to know if I’ll ever get married… (sighs) I don’t even have a boyfriend.
FORTUNE TELLER: Sit down, and let me reveal what the future holds.
(They sit. The Fortune Teller shuffles the cards, spreads them out, and studies GIRL 2.)
FORTUNE TELLER: Clearly, the cards tell me you’re facing a troubling situation.
(The Woman enters quietly and stands behind the girls, listening.)
GIRL 2: (shocked) That’s true! How could you possibly know?
FORTUNE TELLER: Because the cards never lie. You feel lonely and believe no one cares, but that is not true.
GIRL 1: (to Girl 2) I’ve told you that before! I’m always here for you.
GIRL 2: Yes, you are.
FORTUNE TELLER: Therefore, tell me how are you feeling today? Any different?
GIRL 2: Actually, I woke up really happy this morning.
FORTUNE TELLER: Excellent! That means you’re ready for a change.
GIRL 1: A change?
FORTUNE TELLER: Yes—a process to prepare for the arrival of the special person you’ve been waiting for.
GIRL 2: (eyes wide) Does that mean I’ll be married soon?
FORTUNE TELLER: In effect, the cards say yes! You will walk down the aisle in your white dress.
GIRL 1: (hugs Girl 2) That’s amazing!
FORTUNE TELLER: However, before that can happen, we must cleanse you of any bad energy.
GIRL 2: What do you mean?
(The Fortune Teller pulls out a small bottle of water.)
FORTUNE TELLER: This enchanted water will protect you. For seven nights, spray a little on your pillow before bed.
GIRL 1: What does it do?
FORTUNE TELLER: It expels negative energy and evil spirits.
GIRL 2: That’s incredible!
FORTUNE TELLER: Let me spray some now, to remove any curse that may be upon you.
(He sprays water onto Girl 2’s face.)
WOMAN: (muttering) And onto your wallet.
GIRL 2: (relieved) I do feel lighter!
FORTUNE TELLER: You even look better. Without a doubt, your glow shows that the dark energy is leaving your body.
(Suddenly, the Man runs in, frantic.)
MAN: (shouting) My friend! Someone stole your car, broke into your house, and took everything!
FORTUNE TELLER: (jumping up) What?!
MAN: You’ve been robbed—your house is empty!
FORTUNE TELLER: Oh no! Let’s go!
(Girl 2 quickly sprays the “magical” water on the Fortune Teller’s face.)
GIRL 2: This will remove the curse on you!
GIRL 1: Poor man, the spirits got him too.
(The Fortune Teller and the Man rush off. The Woman shakes her head.)
WOMAN: How can a fortune teller predict others’ futures, but not his own?
FORTUNE TELLER: (offstage, shouting) Fortune tellers who read for themselves have a fool for a client!
ALL: (laugh and wave) The End!
The Fortune Teller’s Trick reminds us to think carefully before believing in people who promise to predict our future. True happiness comes from making good choices, not from magical shortcuts.
Moral: Do not let others deceive you with false promises. Trust in yourself and your own actions to build the future you want.
