SCRIPT:
SCENE I – OUTSIDE THE LITTLE MOUSE’S HOUSE
(Little Mouse sweeps outside her cozy little home. She spots something shiny on the ground.)
LITTLE MOUSE: What’s that glimmering in the sun? (picks it up) A gold coin! How lucky I am! Hmm… I could buy candy but that’ll hurt my teeth. A cake? No, I’ll get a tummy ache. Oh! I know… a bright red hair ribbon! I’ll look so stunning, everyone will want to marry me!
(She twirls with excitement and scurries away.)
SCENE II – AT THE RIBBON SHOP
CLERK: Welcome, Little Mouse! What can I do for you?
LITTLE MOUSE: I need the prettiest, most fabulous red ribbon you’ve got!
CLERK: You’re in luck. (hands her a ribbon) This one is magical.
(She ties it in her hair and poses.)
CLERK: You look absolutely charming.
LITTLE MOUSE: Of course I do. I always do.
(Rooster enters, puffing his chest.)
ROOSTER: My feathers flutter! You are the loveliest mouse I’ve ever seen. Marry me!
LITTLE MOUSE: What sound do you make at night?
ROOSTER: Cluck-cluck-bwak! Cluck-cluck-bwak!
LITTLE MOUSE: No thank you! I enjoy peaceful dreams, not barnyard concerts!
ROOSTER: Humph! You’re not that lovely anyway!
(Rooster storms out. Dog enters, wagging his tail.)
DOG: Little Mouse! That ribbon makes you sparkle like a star. Will you marry me?
LITTLE MOUSE: What sound do you make at night?
DOG: WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
LITTLE MOUSE: Oh no! You’ll wake the whole neighborhood!
DOG: Better noisy than sneaky… just wait for the cat.
(Dog trots away. Pig enters, snorting.)
PIG: The others weren’t joking—you really are adorable. Marry me?
LITTLE MOUSE: What sound do you make at night?
PIG: Oink oink! And sometimes… snore snore.
LITTLE MOUSE: Too ordinary. I want someone elegant.
PIG: Suit yourself, Miss Fancy Tail.
(Pig exits. Cat slinks in, purring.)
CAT: My dear Little Mouse… you are exquisite. Won’t you marry me?
LITTLE MOUSE: What sound do you make at night?
CAT: Meow… purrrr… meow…
LITTLE MOUSE: Hmm… soft, but suspicious. I’ve read stories about cats.
CAT (grinning): And most of them end… badly for mice.
(Cat lunges. Mouse screams. Clerk chases the cat away with a broom.)
CLERK: Out! You sneaky whiskered rascal!
(Cat hisses and runs away. A kind-looking Black Mouse enters.)
BLACK MOUSE: Hello. I couldn’t help but notice your lovely ribbon—and your bravery. Will you marry me?
LITTLE MOUSE: What do you do at night?
BLACK MOUSE: I sleep… quietly, peacefully. I dream of cheese and starlight.
LITTLE MOUSE: Finally! A mouse who loves calm as much as I do. Yes, I’ll marry you!
(They twirl and hug as the lights fade.)
In The Mouse with the Red Ribbon, our little mouse learns that flashy looks and loud words aren’t what matter most. In the end, true companionship is found in kindness, peace, and someone who makes you feel safe.
