Helping Your Young Child Deal with Eczema

The itchy, red, and inflamed skin that results from an eczema outbreak is a difficult thing for anyone to handle. Children may particularly struggle with eczema outbreaks. After all, they may not have the self-control to keep themselves from scratching at it. The abrasion of their nails on the irritated skin will only make the symptoms worse. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to help the child in your life that is dealing with eczema.

Address the Symptoms and Causes of the Rash

Children deal with eczema for a variety of reasons, including sweat, extreme stress, allergens, and even dry air. What causes and triggers eczema differs from child to child. It is important that your family takes the time to identify what causes your child eczema outbreaks. Addressing the cause can decrease the frequency of eczema occurrences and also help prevent future skin-related issues.

There are also treatments that you can seek out from your doctor to help minimize the impact of eczema. Topical steroids are a common solution, as well as powerful moisturizers to deal with the itching. It’s important to understand that there is no cure, so you must constantly be on guard for recurring eczema outbreaks and on the watch for the triggers that may cause them.

Help Your Child Overcome Bullying Related to Eczema

For children in school, the bullying that may accompany eczema could be much worse than the actual symptoms of the skin condition. Children can be incredibly cruel about things that are different in their classmates, especially if it looks unusual. Eczema could lead to bullying or children refusing to play with your child out of concern for catching it.

Helping your child understand that eczema is not contagious is an important first step to reducing bullying. They can inform their classmates of that fact and diffuse the worst of the social fallout. If your child does not feel able to address the issue on their own, you might ask the teacher to talk about eczema in front of the whole class to ensure everyone understands the condition. Encouraging tolerance in their classmates can help your child and other children in the class who have medical conditions.

Your child needs love and support, especially when dealing with health issues. Empower your child to make the right choices about reducing their eczema triggers and dealing with their symptoms. Help them develop healthy and positive coping mechanisms to deal with itchy and discomfort. Make sure that you offer emotional support and provide loving guidance as you work with them to reduce the frequency and severity of their eczema symptoms.
