SCRIPT:

Act I – Jazmin’s House

(Knock on the door. Jazmin opens. Karen rushes in dramatically.)

KAREN: Jazmin! Emergency! Life-changing emergency!

JAZMIN: (calmly) Should I call the police… or the kitchen?

KAREN: The kitchen! I entered a cooking contest!

JAZMIN: (raises eyebrow) You… entered… a cooking contest?

KAREN: Don’t focus on the problem—focus on the opportunity!

JAZMIN: The problem is the opportunity. You don’t cook.

KAREN: That’s where you come in. You cook. I win. We celebrate in Cancun.

JAZMIN: (thinking) Cancun?

KAREN: All expenses paid. Beach. Sun. Relaxation. Me saying “thank you forever.”

JAZMIN: (smiles) Alright… what’s the recipe?

KAREN: French fries.

JAZMIN: (laughs) That’s it? Oh, we’ve got this. Come on!

In the Kitchen

(Marcia is sitting, watching TV.)

MARCIA: If this involves food, I’m already interested.

KAREN: Hi, Marcia!

(Jazmin sets everything up.)

JAZMIN: Karen, step one—peel the potatoes. Respect the potato.

KAREN: (peeling awkwardly) I’m respecting it… nervously.

JAZMIN: Now listen carefully. This is not just fries. This is art.

MARCIA: Art that you can eat? My favorite kind.

JAZMIN: To make perfect fries, you fry them twice.

KAREN: Twice? Like… double fries?

JAZMIN: First at low heat—soft and tender. Then high heat—crispy and golden.

MARCIA: Or… you go to a restaurant and skip the speech.

(Jeff enters, grabbing a soda.)

JEFF: Did someone say food? I heard food.

MARCIA: Jazmin’s making “fancy fries.”

JEFF: Oh no… not the long version.

JAZMIN: First, cut them evenly. Then rinse them—remove the starch.

KAREN: (trying hard) This already feels like homework.

JAZMIN: Then place them in cold oil and cook slowly—

JEFF: (chokes on soda) Cold oil?! That sounds illegal.

JAZMIN: It’s technique! It takes time.

MARCIA: How much time?

JAZMIN: About fifteen minutes to start.

JEFF: Fifteen minutes?! I can eat fries in five.

JAZMIN: Then continue cooking—

KAREN: There’s more?!

JAZMIN: Of course there’s more. Perfection takes patience.

MARCIA: Or… hunger takes over.

JEFF: Yeah, by the time these are ready, I’ll be eating the furniture.

JAZMIN: (firmly) Then you raise the heat—

KAREN: (overwhelmed) Wait, wait… low heat, then medium, then high…

MARCIA: Translation: forever.

JEFF: Translation: drive-thru.

KAREN: (worried) Jazmin… are we winning this contest… or aging during it?

JAZMIN: (hesitates) Well…

(Everyone starts talking at once, confusing her.)

MARCIA: Too much oil!

JEFF: Too much time!

MARCIA: Too many steps!

JAZMIN: (puts hands on head) Stop! I lost my train of thought!

(Silence. Jazmin slowly walks to the fridge and pulls out frozen fries.)

JAZMIN: Or… we do this.

KAREN: (hopeful) That looks… easier.

JAZMIN: Open bag. Fry. Salt. Done.

JEFF: Now that’s a recipe I respect.

MARCIA: Fast, simple, and no speeches.

KAREN: (thinking… then sighs) You know what? Let’s just go buy fries.

JEFF: Best idea all day.

MARCIA: I’m already out the door.

(They start leaving.)

JAZMIN: Wait! What about the contest?

KAREN: (shrugs) If there’s no effort… there’s no prize.

(They exit laughing. Jazmin stays behind, thinking.)

JAZMIN: (softly) Maybe perfect fries… aren’t supposed to be easy.
