TOKOLOSHE, THE SLEEP-KILLER DEMON

It’s three in the morning, and you suddenly open your eyes when you hear strange sounds that terrify you. You know that you will remain awake and without rest for several hours because someone is very close to you, waiting under your bed for the right moment to attack you while you sleep. It could be that it is just trying to scare you, prank you, get on your nerves, or get into mischief in your room. However, if it does climb onto your bed, it will strangle you with its long, bony fingers and then drink your blood.

The Tokoloshe is an evil and very dangerous being from Zulu mythology originating in South Africa. This tiny, fat, goblin-like furry creature torments its victims while they sleep at night. For this reason, many raise their beds off the ground using bricks to prevent him from climbing up and killing them with his sharp claws. People say that it is created with mean intentions by a witch using parts of an animal and human corpses and that to give it life, she inserts a hot metal rod through its eyes that reach its brain. It is done not to be able to think and always obey her.

Once this monster comes to life, the witch orders it to perform various jobs to take revenge for some offense. Such as stealing cattle, scaring children, causing disease, poverty, causing family separations, terrorizing the inhabitants of the community, cause all kinds of misfortunes and bad luck. The legend has it that this being half human and half animal carries with him a magical stone that, when swallowed, makes him invisible to others, except for the witch who created him.

In 2014 in South Africa, a boy at home suddenly started shaking and foaming at the mouth before passing out. His father recounted that days before, Tokoloshe had warned his son that he would cause fires in his house. And it was not the first time this had happened since his home had burned down many times. I lost eight beds in a month, and my wife and children lost all their clothes, said the father. The family believes that a Tokoloshe is causing the fires, and their 13-year-old son has seen the creature. He told me that he dreamed the monster had warned him that it would burn him and destroy his home. Even though he was scared, I  asked him to draw it, and he drew a creature with short legs and horns coming out of its head, added his father. The man also stated that the first time a fire happened, his son was asleep when suddenly the bed started to burn, but fortunately, he suffered no injuries. Now the boy is continuously watched as he gets sick every time the fires happen, and when this happens, he sees the Tokoloshe running all over the house only to stop and beat him until he vomits blood. Unfortunately, no one else in the family can see what or who is hurting you.

According to some beliefs, there are some measures you can take to prevent the Tokoloshe from entering your house. One is by sprinkling holy salt around the windows and doors to discourage him from crossing. You should also keep all the lights on at night and place two bricks under each of the legs of your bed, although, unfortunately, this will only protect you and not the other inhabitants of the house. Finally, you must remember that the Tokoloshe feeds on the negative energy and despair of its victims., so it is best to surround yourself with positive people who love you and support you to counteract the negativity with which it feeds.
