The Benefits Of Teaching Your Child To Make Videos
Creativity plays an important role in child development: it “helps us deal with change, problem solving, affects our social and emotional intelligence, enhances our understanding of math and science, and is a key component to health and happiness,” explains Christine Carter of UC Berkeley. Parents looking to develop their children’s creativity should consider video making as a hobby: it’s an accessible, fun and creative outlet that teaches children valuable developmental skills.
Helping childhood development
Whether you’re shooting a home video or are out and about together exploring, teaching your child to make videos can help them develop a range of important skills. For example, teaching them how to focus the camera lens will help your child develop good hand and eye coordination, as well as strengthen their motor skills. As your child grows in confidence over time, they’ll also learn to experiment with wide versus narrow shots and become aware of the importance of getting the lighting and sound right. It’s important your child is given the freedom to make mistakes, however. Trying out different methods of filming and inevitably getting things wrong is the only way they’ll learn, grow and gain confidence. In turn, this process develops their critical thinking skills.
Easy and inexpensive hobby
Filming videos doesn’t necessarily need any fancy equipment, and it’s easier and safer this way. For example, you can teach your child to film simple videos on your smartphone with just a few presses of a button. However, investing in a microphone can help you capture clear and high-quality audio that helps the video shine. Smartphone mics tend to pick up ambient noise, but a shotgun mic, for example, is excellent at picking up sound directly from the source and blocking extraneous noise. Additionally, wearing headphones can help you catch and block wind, ambient, and other unwanted noise as and when it happens. This can also make the project more interesting and give your child some extra responsibility when they’re ready for it.
The importance of staying safe
While teaching your child how to make videos, it’s important to prioritize safety. Firstly, make sure the camera isn’t too big for your child and that they can hold it by themselves comfortably and safely. The camera should also have simple settings, large and clearly-marked buttons, and be easy for your child to use. Always supervise your child whenever they’re filming to keep them as safe as possible. Additionally, talk to your children about respecting other people’s privacy and boundaries if you’re ever filming in public. They should never start filming anyone in public without asking their permission beforehand, as not everyone wants to be filmed and doing so could cause problems.
Teaching your child to make videos can be a fun and rewarding hobby for parents and children alike. As well as strengthening important developmental skills, you can help your child grow in confidence and creativity as they find new ways to engage with the world around them.
