Your child’s self-esteem has a tremendous impact on their future. Studies have found that while kids with high self-esteem generally perform better at school and grow up to be well-adjusted adults, children with low self-esteem are more likely to have poor health and engage in criminal behavior when they’re older. By teaching kids useful life skills, parents can help their children to feel more confident and capable. Clothes making is ideal for kids because once they build up their ability, they can use this skill to express themselves through their personal style. Plus, it’s a skill they can use in their other interests, such as designing costumes for the theatre.
How To Teach Kids New Skills
When teaching kids new skills, it’s important to remember that children don’t have as much patience as adults, and they’re even less patient when it comes to their own parents. In other words, they’re more likely to listen to someone who isn’t their parent. You could also enlist the help of professionals. Contact local fashion companies and ask if they’d be willing to start a mentoring program with the kids in your community. Mentoring from local companies can enhance kids’ self-esteem, as well as help them develop their interpersonal skills. Meanwhile, these fashion companies can use these programs to create a network of volunteers and gain more insight into how young people think. Of course, teaching your child a new skill is can also be an excellent bonding activity for the two of you., and watching your child gain confidence will leave you with a great sense of accomplishment. If you choose to teach your child yourself, remember to be patient. Keeping your sessions short may also help.
One Skill At A Time
Even adults will have a hard time getting things right the first time. Don’t expect perfection, and resist the urge to swoop in and do everything. You can make things easier by helping out with certain tasks (such as threading needles) so that your child can focus on stitching. Once your child is comfortable with a certain skill, you can start teaching another. Keep in mind that it’s perfectly fine if your child only finishes part of a project by themselves. Teaching kids how to sew isn’t about conquering a project, but building ability and confidence. If your child needs help or even asks you to finish a project, go ahead! As they develop their skills, they’ll also develop their stamina and enjoyment for the hobby.
Sewing 101 For Children
Before you begin, consider whether or not your child has the coordination needed for sewing. If you feel that your child isn’t quite ready, don’t worry. You don’t have to jump straight into it. Try customizing plain clothes with buttons, fabric paints and dyes to get your child’s creative juices flowing. You could tie-dye t-shirts and pajamas to get started. Play around with different textiles and craft objects so your child becomes familiar with the different materials.
If you think your child is ready to learn, start by teaching how to sew by hand. Working with a sewing machine is a totally different skill, and hand sewing is a much easier way to cover the basics. First, work on simple projects like pillows, then move onto sewing basic dresses for dolls. This will require learning how to seam and hem garments, and can easily lead to sewing full-sized clothes.
Remember to praise your child often to encourage them about their progress. When it comes to negative feedback, try to hold back, and simply point out a couple of things they can work on next time. Focus on building your child up instead of perfecting their skills, and you’ll find yourself on the right path.
