Don’t Fear the Dentist
Are your little ones frightened of the dentist? Going to the dentist can be a new and overwhelming experience for small children. It is important to make this experience as gentle and easy as possible so that they do not develop an ongoing fear or phobia as they get older. Up to 15% of American adults fear the dentist – it even stops them from visiting when they need to. Children need to learn about trusting their dentist to look after their teeth from an early age, so they aren’t frightened.
Turn brushing teeth into a game
Looking after your teeth needn’t be a chore. Instead, you can turn brushing into a game. Brush your own teeth at the same time as your child, showing them the right way to clean your teeth. Imagine being different animals, the giant yawn of the hippopotamus, or brushing the long teeth of the donkey. There are some great videos and songs about teeth brushing online that you can brush along too. You can incorporate words sung to familiar nursery rhymes. This poem is sung to the words of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
“Got my toothpaste, got my brush, I won’t hurry, I won’t rush.
Making sure my teeth are clean, Front and back and in-between,
When I brush for quite a while, I will have a happy smile.”
Read about the dentist
Young children respond love reading books (especially fairy tales)! Use the opportunity of a bedtime story to introduce them to other characters that also visit the dentist. Some good books about teeth are Little Rabbit’s Loose Tooth by Lucy Bate, Arthur Tricks the Tooth Fairy by Marc Brown and Maisie, Charley and the Wobbly Tooth by Lucy Cousins. Books can help them to understand that everybody needs dental care.
