SCRIPT:
NARRATOR 1: It was a long, long time ago, when this happened.
ALL NARRATORS: How long?
NARRATOR 2: It happened six hundred years ago, on an age of wonderful voyages.
All NARRATORS: Wow! That’s wonderful!
NARRATOR 3: In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue looking for treasures, species, and adventures too.
NARRATOR 4: Columbus was interested in the sky, the sea, and also in discovering new lands.
NARRATOR 5: The Portuguese had discovered new routes to the east, and Columbus knew the earth was round and not flat.
ALL NARRATORS: Round not flat.
NARRATOR 6: Columbus went to talk to the King and Queen of Portugal.
ALL NARRATORS: The King and Queen!
COLUMBUS: Your majesty, I want to talk with you. It is a must!
KING: Why?
COLUMBUS: Your majesty, I know that the earth is round, and I can reach new routes to bring you riches. Can you help me?
ALL NARRATORS: Please, please, please.
KING: No, my lands are vast, and my sailors are the best. No way!
COLUMBUS: Please, your majesty, with your help and the new knowledge I have, I can find a new short way to the East.
QUEEN: Columbs, I am sorry we cannot help you. You will need a lot of money.
NARRATOR 7: Columbus left the King and Queen, but he kept thinking about the sea.
ALL NARRATORS: Kept thinking about the sea.
NARRATOR 8: Columbus got to the conclusion that the earth was round, but his theory was not accepted by the King of England.
NARRATOR 9: Six years passed, and Columbus came back again, and talked to the Monastery Superior.
ALL NARRATORS: Came back again!
MONASTERY SUPERIOR: Your plans seem acceptable. I will lead you to the King and Queen of Spain.
COLUMBUS: My dear Magesty, my deerest Queen, I know you trust me, please help me sail to the sea. I will claim the lands for you.
KING AND QUEEN: We have received good news about you, from the Dukes of Medinaceli.
COLUMBUS: I have come to place at your feet, the treasure of new lands.
KING AND QUEEN: In name of our kingdom, we will name you governor of the new lands, and we will give you part of the treasures you find.
QUEEN: Here Columbus. I will give you all my jewels, so you can buy some ships and food for the trip.
KING: I will give you men to sail and permission to go.
COLUMBUS: I will set sail and conquer lands and treasures for Castile and Leon.
NARRATOR 10: Christopher Columbus went to talk to some sailors.
COLUMBUS: I will take you there, to India.
ALL SAILORS: Uh! Oh! But how?
COLUMBUS: I can take you there by ship.
ALL SAILORS: Oh no! No way!
COLUMBUS: I have bought two small ships.
ALL SAILORS: La Niña, and La Pinta!
COLUMBUS: And a very big ship, too!
ALL SAILORS: La Santa Maria!
NARRATOR 11: After recruiting all the sailors, and buying the three ships, they set sail from Puerto de Palos.
NARRATOR 12: Days and Months passed and the crew was desperate and they asked Columbus to go back to Spain.
SAILOR 1: I am scared! You are wrong Columbus!
ALL SAILORS: Me too!
SAILOR 2: I am thirsty!
ALL SAILORS: And there is no fresh water to drink.
SAILOR 3: And there is no food to eat.
ALL SAILORS: No food to eat!
SAILOR 4: I am homesick, and seasick!
ALL SAILORS: We will never go back home again.
SAILORS SING:
I see no land, I see no Land, I see no land, just water everywhere! Water everywhere!
SAILOR 5: Land! Land! I see land, land on sight!
COLUMBUS: Keep sailing!
ALL SAILORS: Sh, sh, sh.
SAILOR 6: Captain, you have mistaken the route!
ALL SAILORS: Yes, you have!
SAILOR 7: What’s that? Is that a monster?
ALL SAILORS: You have lied to us!
SAILOR 8: Look! It’s fire!
ALL SAILORS: No! It’s a volcano!
SAILOR 9: Calm down partners, the route is right. Let’s sail with faith.
SAILOR 10: We will never go back home again!
ALL SAILORS: Bu! Bu! Bu!
NARRATOR 13: The Yanez Pinzon brothers calmed the crew, and the continued sailing tp reach the biggest discovery in the history of humanity.
SAILOR 11: Land, land. I see land ahead! Land on sight!
NARRATOR 14: They continued the trip, until October 12th. 1492, when they reached land.
ALL SAILORS: Hooray! Hooray!
COLUMBUS: (kisses the ground) Sailors, we have reached our goal for Castile and Leon.
ALL SAILORS: Hooray! Hooray!
COLUMBUS: I will take this land in name of Spain and call it San Salvador.
NARRATOR 15: The people of the new land welcomed Columbus. They were called Indians.
INDIAN 1: Welcome, welcome, white men. The gods are here!
INDIAN 2: White men, I just harvested these vegetables for you.
INDIAN 3: And I just picked this fruit for you all.
INDIAN 1: We welcome you with a god’s dance.
Indians Dance
NARRATOR 16: And this is how Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492, aboard of the three ships.
Song:
America, America.
God shed his grace on thee
And crown tht good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
