THE SECRET

SCRIPT:
ACT 1
(In the forest. The hut has a kitchen, a stove with a pot of food, and a living room. Debby is outside watering the plants. Her father approaches her)
FATHER: (to Debby) Your sisters and I are going to the village. I’m cooking some beef stew, please watch over it, and be sure not to burn it. Now, go inside the house and do what I told you.
DEBBY: Yes, father.
(Debby goes inside the hut. Arianna, Kelly, and their father leave. Debby sits in the kitchen table. There is a pot of food on the stove)
DEBBY: I forgot what my father told me to do!. I think he said I should sew his socks.
(Debby takes some socks and sews them. She forgets about the food in the stove. A few minutes later her father and her two sisters enter. Her father goes straight to the stove)
FATHER: The food is burning!.
ARIANNA AND KELLY: Ha, ha, ha, ha.
FATHER: (to Debby) I told you to watch over the food!.
DEBBY: On, I thought you told me to sew your socks.
FATHER: My socks?. What were you thinking about?. Didn’t you smell… like… fire?.
DEBBY: No, I didn’t.
FATHER: You’ll never change!. What is wrong with you?. What have I done?. I don’t deserve this!.
ARIANNA AND KELLY: We told you father that she forgets everything!.
(Prince Ted knocks at the door)
FATHER: (to Arianna) Open the door, please.
(Arianna opens the door)
ARIANNA: How can I help you?.
PRINCE TED: Oh, you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen in my entire life!. What’s your name?.
ARIANNA: Well, thank you. I’m Arianna.
(Kelly and Debby approach Arianna and Prince Ted)
PRINCE TED: Oh my, the three of you are so beautiful!.
DEBBY, KELLY, ARIANNA: Who are you?.
PRINCE TED: I am Prince Ted. And who are YOU?.
KELLY: (bows) My name is Kelly.
DEBBY: (bows) I’m Debby.
PRINCE TED: I am deeply in love with all of you, but I can only marry one of you.
DEBBY, KELLY, ARIANNA: Please, come in.
( Prince Ted enters the hut. He looks around)
PRINCE TED: There’s a strange smell in the air.
FATHER: Never mind about the smell. Who are you?.
PRINCE TED: I am Prince Ted, and I want to marry one of your beautiful daughters.
FATHER: Please, sit down.
(They sit)
PRINCE TED: As I was telling you, I want to marry one of your daughters.
FATHER: Which one?.
PRINCE TED: It’s hard to decide. The three of them are really beautiful, but I will marry the one who can keep a secret.
DEBBY, KELLY, ARIANNA: A secret?.
PRINCE TED: Yes, a secret. Can you keep a secret Arianna?.
ARIANNA: I hope so.
(Prince Ted stands and whispers something into Arianna’s ears)
ARIANNA: Oh, how strange it is.
PRINCE TED: I’ll be back in a week. If you can keep the secret, then I’ll marry you. Good-bye.
(Prince Ted leaves)
KELLY AND DEBBY: What did he say?. Tell us!.
ARIANNA: It’s a secret!.
FATHER: Stop it girls. You heard it, it’s a secret.
KELLY: Come on, Arianna. I know you well, you can’t keep secrets.
FATHER: Leave her alone.
ARIANNA: You are right. I can’t keep secrets, and you know it too, father.
DEBBY: I have an idea!. Why don’t you go to the well and just say the secret out loud. Nobody will hear you. Just the well!.
ARIANNA: Good idea!. But you have to stay here, I’ll be back soon.
(Arianna goes out to the well. She bends over and says the secret out loud to the well)
ARIANNA: Now I feel much better!.
(She goes back to the hut)
KELLY: Did you do it?.
ARIANNA: Yes, I did.
FATHER: It’s been a long day and we need to rest. Good night.
(They leave)
ACT 2
(Father, Arianna, Kelly, and Debby are in the living room. Prince Ted knocks at the door. Debby looks through the window)
DEBBY: It’s the prince!.
(Arianna opens the door)
ARIANNA: Please, come in.
(Prince Ted enters and sits)
PRINCE TED: (To Arianna) Did you keep the secret?
ARIANNA: Yes, your highness.
(The prince looks at Kelly and Debby)
PRINCE TED: Did she tell you the secret?.
KELLY AND DEBBY: No!. No, she didn’t.
PRINCE TED: Then you will be my….
(A Worm enters)
WORM: (yelling) No!. No!. I live in the well. She went to the well and yelled your secret. I heard it!.
PRINCE TED: What’s the secret?.
WORM: You have a hole in your right shoe.
PRINCE TED: (to Arianna) It’s true!. You can’t be my wife.
ARIANNA: I’m sorry. (to Kelly and Debby) It was your idea!.
PRINCE TED: (to Kelly) Can you keep a secret?.
KELLY: Oh, sure I can, prince.
(Prince Ted stands and whispers a secret into Kelly’s ears)
KELLY: It’s so funny!.
PRINCE TED: If you can keep the secret for a week, I’ll marry you. Good-bye.
(Prince Ted leaves)
DEBBY AND ARIANNA: What did he say?. Tell us!.
KELLY: It’s a secret!.
FATHER: Stop it girls. You heard it. It’s a secret.
ARIANNA: Come on, Kelly. I know you well. You can’t keep secrets!.
FATHER: Leave her alone.

PRINCE TED: (to Kelly) Did you keep the secret?.

( the Bird enters)

BIRD: You have a hole in your left shoe.
PRINCE TED: (to Kelly) It’s true!. You can’t be my wife.
KELLY: I’m sorry. (to Arianna and Debby) It was your idea!.

(Prince Ted leaves)
ARIANNA AND KELLY: What did he say?. Tell us!.
DEBBY: No!. No!. I can’t.
ARIANNA AND KELLY: Yes, you can!.
DEBBY: No, really, I can’t. I forgot what he said!.
ARIANNA AND KELLY: Oh no!.
FATHER: (to Arianna and Kelly) Ha, ha, ha, ha…Do you remember what you told me?. She forgets everything!. Ha, ha, ha, ha.
DEBBY: I am trying hard to remember, but I can’t.
ARIANNA AND KELLY: Try harder!.
FATHER: Now it’s really a secret, even to her, ha, ha, ha, ha.
(They leave. Their father keeps laughing)
ACT 4
(Father, Arianna, Kelly, and Debby are in the living room. Prince Ted knocks at the door. Kelly looks through the window)
KELLY: It’s the prince!.
(Debby opens the door)
DEBBY: Please, come in.
(Prince Ted enters and sits)
PRINCE TED: (To Debby) Did you keep the secret?.
DEBBY: No.
PRINCE TED: So you couldn’t keep the secret, just like your sisters!. At least you are being honest with me.
DEBBY: I forgot it.
PRINCE TED: You forgot the secret?.
DEBBY: Yes, I did. I can’t remember what you told me.
PRINCE TED: Will you marry me?.
DEBBY: Yes, I will!.
(They hug)
