Props: Two chairs, chest with jewels, three cardboard ships.
SCRIPT:
(- Lights On – Kids 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 stand on the left side of the stage. Kids 7, 8, 9, 10 stand on the right side of the stage. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella sit on their thrones in the middle of the stage. There is a chest full of jewels on the floor)
KID 1: It was a long, long time ago.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: How long?.
KID 2: More than five hundred years ago.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: Ohhh!.
KID 3: It was the year 1492 when an Italian Spanish navigator.
KID 4: Sailed across the ocean blue.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: Why?.
KID 5: Because since he was a child he was interested in the sky and sea.
KID 6: He liked ships and love to sail.
KID 1: Who was this man?.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: Christoper Columbus!.
KID 2: Let me tell you his story.
(- Lights Off – Cristopher Columbus enters, and stands in the center of the stage in front of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and facing the audience – Lights On)
KID 2: Columbus knew that the earth was round, not flat.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: Round not flat!.
KID 3: He decided to talk to the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: From Spain.
(Cristopher Columbus turns around)
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: Your magesties… I know that the earth is round, and I know I can reach a shorter route to the Indies. Please, help me.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: Please, please, please.
KING FERDINAND: No!. We don’t have money, and we think you’re lying. Besides, there are monsters in the sea.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: Oh!. Monsters in the sea!.
QUEEN ISABELLA: I’m sorry. We can not help you. Your trip will be very expensive.
(Cristopher Columbus turns around and faces the audience, then he leaves)
KID 4: Columbus left the King and Queen, but kept thinking about his dream of finding a shorter route to the Indies, and went to see the King of Portugal.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: But he did not believe in his project.
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SINGS:
Who will help me?
Cross the sea
To where
I have never been
And find and reach the Indies.
KID 5: Years later, Columbus came back to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.
(Christoper Columbus enters and stands in front of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella)
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: Your magesties… I know you trust me. Please help me sail the sea. I will claim the land for you. For Spain!.
QUEEN ISABELLA: What do you need?.
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: I need money to buy some ships.
QUEEN ISABELLA SINGS:
Oh, my King, you’re so kind
Oh, my King, you have power
I come to you
To ask for money
to buy some ships
for a sailor
I’ve just met.
(Queen Isbella takes the chest of jewels and gives them to Cristopher Columbus)
QUEEN ISABELLA: Take my jewels, go and buy some ships, and conquer your dream. For Castile’s glory!.
(Cristopher Columbus takes the chest of jewels)
KING FERDINAND: We now give you the name of Admiral of the Ocean Sea.
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: (puts his right hand on his chest) I’ll sail away, and I’ll conquer new lands and treasures for Castile and Leon!.
(Cristopher Columbus leaves taking the chest of jewels. – Light Off – The King and Queen leave. Sailors and Cristopher Columbus enter and stand in the middle of the stage where there are three ships– Lights On -)
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: (to Sailors) Come with me to the Indies. We will sail on this three ships: The Niña, The Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
SAILOR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. 6: Yes, we’ll go with you!. We don’t care if we sail to new lands!.
SAILORS SING:
We are free!
Facing the Sun
We are free!
We don’t mind
If we sail to the Indies
As long as
We are free!
(Sailors get on the ships)
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: A ship went sailing on the sea. Across the world, to you and me. Went sailing on… so fierlesly!.
KID 6: And who was admiral of the crew?.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: That sail across the sea so blue?.
KID 1: In 1492!.
KIDS 7, 8, 9, 10: Cristopher Columbus!.
SAILOR 1: I’m scared!.
SAILOR 2: I’m thirsty!.
SAILORS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: There’s no water to drink!.
SAILOR 3: I’m hungry!.
SAILORS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: There’s no food to eat.
SAILOR 4: Admiral, this is not the way!.
SAILOR 5: You’re wrong!.
SAILOR 6: Let’s go back!.
SAILOR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: Or we will die!.
SAILORS SING:
Let’s get him!
Come on sailors!
If we keep sailing!
We could die!
Columbus, you’re insane!
You will never make it!
You will never reach
The Indies!
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: No!. We will continue our trip!.
SAILOR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: We’ve sailed for so long!.
SAILOR 1: Look over there!.
SAILOR 2: It’s a sea monster!.
SAILOR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: Ahhhhh!.
SAILOR 3: We will never see land again!.
SAILOR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: Look!.
SAILOR 4: It’s not a monster!. It’s land!.
SAILOR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: Land!. Land!. Land!.
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: Sailors!. We have reached the Indies!.
SAILORS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: Hoorray!. Hoorray!.
SAILORS SING AND DANCE:
We always knew,
We were going to make it,
Hooray!
We always knew,
We were going to succeed!
Hooray!
You will always remember
that we as sailors
had a great faith
And had courage and loyalty
Hooray!
(Cristopher Columbus and the sailors get off the boats. Cristopher Columbus kneels down and kisses the ground)
CRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: (he puts his right hand on his chest) I take this land on behalf of our magesties, the King and Queen of Castile and Leon!. From now on, this land will be known as San Salvador.
– Lights Off –
